26 reasons to use Facebook and other social networking website
1. Connecting with friends and family - You can stay in touch with your friends and family and relatives no matter how far they are from you. This is not just email or chat conversation. But you can post your recent activity pictures or videos or you could update your current status and your friends could post their comments on it. You could also chat and pm or personal message them or scrap or write on their wall (adsense term for sending a message publicly )
2. Distance is not a barrier - No matter how far you are from you are from your family, the regular video, music, picture posts and status updates and commenting make you feel close to them.
3. Keeps you occupied - It keeps you occupied especially when you do not have nice things to do around you or nice places around you where you can go or nice people around you to whom you cannot talk to. Or if you are working from home on your PC and cant go around much but have plenty of free time in between of your work.
4. Dating service - Facebook, Orkut, Twitter etc are almost like free dating services. You can browse various through profiles, see pictures, hobbies and other stuff about people depending on their profile's security level and if you are interested, you can poke them, send them a personal message or may be add them as a friend and take over from there ;-) .
5. Something interesting and changing - Sometimes our life gets very monotonous and boring and we look up to something that is interesting and changing. Its something like shares, or a waiting for a lottery ticket where people eagerly wait for the rate of a share to increase or wait for the results of a lottery ticket. People can browse through the walls and see around the latest updates of their friends and family. Latest pictures of a trip to somewhere or a video or post something that is happening with them and see what people think about it. For example "Got a new job. Joining on Friday".
6. Interesting videos - People post a lot of videos on networking sites like Facebook. These are really good mostly and of various categories, funny, emotional, patriotic etc. You can "like" them, comment on them, share them. Etc.
7. Keep updated about friends and family - You get to know the latest news about what is happening with your friends and family by watching their pictures and reading their status messages and the comments on them by other friends. The comments are mostly like a question and answer session. You get to know a lot about the latest stuff about your liked ones.
8. Connect to new friends via old friends - You get to know a lot of new people via your old friends. Networking websites like Facebook, orkut etc have this facility of suggesting you with people who you might know. These are generally common friends or your friend's friends. Sometimes you become friends by just commenting on a comment from some one you don’t know but the post on which you both comment is of a person who is common to you or may be the subject of the post is of common interest.
9. Games - Brain and skill development - Facebook has loads and loads of games. It seems to have some kind of tie up with mind jolt games. There are many strategy games like Tiny Adventures : Dungeons and Dragons or games which improve you quickness - crazy cab or tricky games like bouncing balls.
10. Various articles - Along with videos and music and picture, there are millions of articles that people post on Facebook. Most of these articles are informative and interesting. These could improve your reading skills and English. These are also published in other languages.
11. Hobby or common interest communities and groups - One of the best things about the social networking websites is that they encourage you to create and join various communities based on your interest. People having interest in the subject of the community or group can join it. You start a topic or ask doubts or give your opinion to solve some one else's doubts, participate in discussions, arrange a face to face meeting or parties etc.
12. Express Opinion and Debate - You can express your thought about anything be it an article, something written on some one's wall, video, audio etc. Sometimes a simple status message gets so many comments and a leads into a huge discussion. For example an update message like "Love is happening.." can lead to many comments or a message like "Inception is an average movie" could lead to a debate.
13. Job opportunities - There are many people who post job advertisements on networking websites to make their jobs easy. For example one of my friends called Jashan Joshi who I think is an HR (into Human resources) often posts job opportunities on Facebook and orkut. Now the thing is that there are so many people who work in IT and who are on Facebook which makes his job easy when people who read the job requirement posting, start replying to him via a personal message.
14. News, movie, songs, gossip updates - Websites like Facebook can be called as all in one because they are so versatile. You get to know the latest happening stuff in the world along with updates on the lives of movie actors, music stars, gossip etc. There must be thousands and millions of articles posted on Facebook each day.
15. Promotions to popularise your stuff - adverts - You can popularise your business or website or shop or anything via promotions on orkut or by simply creating a group related to your business. Or you can even write pages about your business or website and when you submit them they are automatically published and all your friends can see it. If some of your friends "like" it, then their friends also can see your article about your business. So in this way it could be very popular in no time depending on how interesting you make the article. In orkut there is an option called "promotion" where you can create a short advertisement of the stuff you like. It can be pure text or a YouTube video or an orkut picture. There is an advertising option on Facebook too but it is chargeable though it has more facilities and options than orkut.
16. Introvert people ( good for them ) - Some people are too shy to open up in public. They take time to make friends. Even if they are interested in someone they are not able to gather the guts to go and approach him or her. So, it obviously becomes very easy for them to do this on social networking sites like Facebook, twitter, orkut etc because here there is no face to face encounter.
17. Free of cost - You don’t have to pay anything to become a member and make friends and do all the activities on social networking sites. I have not heard of any social networking website charging its members to be its members. It is amazing to have all these features for free when you compare them with other dating sites which mostly charge their members.
18. Behaviour and Nature study - You get to know a person's mentality, nature by his or her updates, scraps, wall posts etc. You come to know how he or she thinks and what attitude does he / she carry while in different situations. You can know the quality of their sense of humour, temper limit, patience etc. and that person will not even know that some one is studying so much about them.
19. adsense promotion - People who are into making money from their websites via programs like Google adsense, adbrite and other affiliate programs can benefit a lot. Like I mentioned above, you can post your links on your walls, or post YouTube or other videos which have your website's links or write and article which contains your link or mention your website's link indirectly in your group's discussion etc. This would increase the number of visits to your website and hence increase the chances of having clicks on the adverts on the website.
20. Talent / skills show - You can show off your talent and achievements on Facebook and orkut etc. For example, you can post a video showing yourself playing the guitar or may be you can post something like "Attending Graduation day".
21. Feedback Giver - Social networking websites are good for getting feedback about something. For example you if you are not sure about which career to choose. You can simply write a status message saying "Career in Banking or Computers ?" and your friends will come up with loads of feed back.
22. Good for Disabled people - It is a very good place for disabled people who have trouble moving around. They can keep in touch with their friends in an effective way without having to move or travel.
23. Test your skills via application - Facebook has loads of very interesting and innovative applications which could be beneficial to you and you could get involved without getting bored. For example the application where you test your typing speed. One of my Wife's cousin who's name is Rohan Naidu had a record of around 3.5 seconds I think. And he fell among the 3% of the world's population who could do this. These statistics were given by Facebook. Similarly there are other applications where you can check your IQ and General Knowledge etc.
24. 24/7 connected - You can be connected to most of these social networking websites 24 by 7 because now they are available on mobile phones too so you can be connected all the while.
25. Language improvement - Facebook has a program for translating its stuff in different languages where you can volunteer to help Facebook translate its content in various languages. By taking part in such programs you get the opportunity of improving your language skills.
26. Motivation - Social networking websites are a hidden source of motivation. It makes you feel really good when you post a video where you are playing guitar and your friends praise you by posting comments. You feel like improving more and more. Similarly it make you happy when you post some travel pics and you get a lot of appreciation via comments.
