August 17, Day 10 With My Class...but not really

Today when I got to school my teacher was gone. There was a sub and I didn’t want to add any chaos to the room, so I stayed in the library working on my assignments. They’re all due today and I had to add 1,000 words to my research write up because this weekend Laura decided to give us clear expectations for the assignments…wish I would have had them sooner. I decided while I was working on my paper to make a list of any other random facts about Australia I hadn’t written about yet. This is what I came up with:
• The Australian Army, which has always been fighting with the USA, but doesn’t really do any of the dirty work, has lost 18 people in this war…we’ve lost 1,226 as of today. (Those numbers are just the war in Afghanistan.)
• During their election campaign the current prime minister has to implement a national broadband network as part of her campaign
• Both candidates are pushing for a 2013 national school curriculum
• In the alphabet they don’t call Z by the name we call it… they say it’s name is “Zed”
• They refer to what we call drunk driving as “drink driving”
• They don’t call international travel “traveling abroad” they say “traveling overseas”
• After talking to a few Australian who have traveled abroad they say the easiest way to figure out driving is “the driver always sits on the line.” So when you get in a car, wherever the driver’s seat is in the car, that side touches the middle line…good to know.
• During Australian news at least a third of it is about the USA
• They call our money “greenbacks” because theirs is colorful and ours is all green but they’re both called “dollars”
• All their websites have “.au” after the “.com” part. The link to Google Australia is: http://www.google.com.au/
• They have random breath tests for driving. The police set up road stops and wave people in for random breathalyzers. People have to pull in if they are signaled, if you don’t there’s a cop car waiting down the road to go after them. That’s today picture, I saw one coming home last night.
After school my project was done. It was exactly 2,600 words and 8 pages long. I have officially done all my work towards my 6 Master’s credits :
