Bendix Computer circa 1960's

It is important for Antiquarian Holographica to give a whole picture of the golden era of holography. Therefore, and from time to time, you will find a seemingly off-topic post, and perhaps wonder if I have lost my mind. Today's post is a case-in-point: a great photo of a early to mid-1960's Bendix computer system, in use by American Airlines to compute weather data for flight patterns. Why this particular shot? Well, firstly, I am getting ready to file the book and there's a good chance that I may not ever see it open again. Secondly, it represents the era of the very first holograms. THIS is what computing was like during that time frame.

You see, here at Antiquarian Holographica, we believe that the more that one knows about the time periods involved, the more one becomes immersed in that particular time of holography. Holography did not exist in a vacuum. There was an entire world "out there", all happening at the same time: cars, music, home furnishings, wallpaper patterns, clothing, air travel, space programs, computing, communication satellites, lasers, optics, supermarkets . . . the list could literally go on forever.

So, my dear reader, look closely at this photo. It shows the very early days of electronic computing. It existed side-by-side with the development of lasers and holograms, as it did with so many other social and cultural happenings of the day.
