hmm.. alice, i am definitely not very good at political and patriotic expressions but just yesterday i came across a few of my friends discussing about patriotism and its association with borders and/or boundaries.
Well i don't know how to talk the way they do about all the political basis for this issue but i think they may be a little easier on themselves if they know that maintaining boundaries is a very important and huge part in Nature, as in for the survival of everything and so it is not new for man of any nation too , to be obsessed with the boundaries issue.
Did you know that one of the ways in which a lion marks its territory is by a huge roar. And trust me it does, the sound waves that travel around with the particular kind of roar are like a warning signal to any lions or lionesses in and around the region.And.. this totally works.
It's not just the lion , every living creature on earth is bound to do so in order to survive and the basic instinct that drives one into making territories is ' insecurity'. Survival is a really tough task and with the great ' diversity ' on earth it's not easy in anyway. One organism or species has always a chance of being wiped out if it does not appropriately protect itself and its clan from impending dangers, be it from predators or even nature.
So it is a general practice that to survive , whether peacefully or not, one has to make boundaries.
Let me explain it with a human analogy, why is it that we build a wall to mark the extremes of our house when we very well know our neighbours will not encroach it and will be on friendly terms . And if you have a nosy and annoying neighbour building a wall will never stop him , does it? ;) What i mean to say is that this is only because of the feeling of insecurity. And this is not just now, this is a quality mankind has been nourishing , and now using for the wrong purposes, since his inception and growth on earth. The early savage man never allowed another one to enter his heavenly cave. :) And this has been so since then, so it is obvious and to an extent unavoidable that people everywhere in the world will be for boundaries, be it good or bad.
And as far as nationalism is concerned , my friends were pretty much discussing and/or debating about it being a personal or general idea. As far as i have seen it's a kind of " personal idea at the general level." , i.e., to say that it starts up as a personal point of view accumulates into a general one and that is what drives huge masses of people to call themselves as a nation / country. And once they have done so, for better security they unite and form the geographical country with all its boundaries. And since it is so huge, a group / 'lot' of people of the so-formed country are thrust at the borders in the name of patriotism to actually maintainthe boundaries intact. But They are not wrong either. If it was so , there would still be all the taking over and wars and the like going on. Of course they still are. If you see , even within the so-formed outwardly harmonious countries, there are 'n' number of disagreements, and trials of encroachments going on, and i mean the 1st through the 3rd world countries. So if left unchecked , there is no doubt that the so-called civilized man will become the early savage man again.
Regarding the cultures and values / principles of a nation, ... does it really matter where the value / culture is from as long as it is good for man to live in harmony. If you don't like a culture, follow the one you like ...it is no more the old world where on was forced to follow something. And though such a thing still exists , well all we can do is , instead of waging a war against it , better compromise and make things more smooth to deal with. Of course nothing can be done about religious fanatics though, they only bring disgrace to their own cultures and/or religions which they deny to be doing.
That is how man's nature is and it cannot be undone since man as we know will continue to do that till he brings upon himself the ultimate destruction.
The boundaries, if we want to be in peace and not let our differences affect their lives, are truly not what stop us from doing what we ought to . As one of my friends was saying, "Ideally, a boundary less, resource sharing, all happy world will be great, but practically that cannot happen." But knowing the history of mankind... we can as well do it.
Well, well, well, i think i just said a few things, and i don't know how much i stuck to the point. But if you are able to get what i wanted to say i guess i am fine with it. After all am really bad at this particular stuff. ;) Oh and Alice, if you really find sense in what i just said , you are really great :P
