Movie Watch Free English,Trailer Review Cast Posted: 16 Aug 2010 10:53 PM PDT  Terrific performances by the children fail to overcome Thompson's dour lead character and the audience is left to hope a third film is not on the cinematic horizonThe second of a threatened trio of Nanny McPhee flicks once again sees Emma Thompson spending long days in the makeup chair, getting hagged-up with a snaggletooth, fake nose and hair-sprouting warts to become Nanny McPhee. Aided by magical powers, McPhee’s job is to mysteriously appear on the doorstep of a troubled family – the Greens, in this case – to help them to help themselves. Set in the English countryside during wartime, the scary-looking nanny has come to assist Isabel (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a stressed mother-of-three. Isabel’s husband is at the battlefront, and bad guy Uncle Phil (Rhys Ifans) is trying to steal her farm. On top of this, Isabel’s prissy niece and nephew have fled London, seeking rural refuge in her home. The city and country cousins initially detest each other, but soon band together – literally to save the farm – and their developing relationship is the film’s main strength. There are also well executed scenes – the one with synchronised swimming piglets is tremendous fun, and the finale has the promised big bang. Like the rest of the film, these sequences are crafted with great professionalism, but little passion. While the children (including The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ Asa Butterfield) are terrific, the adult cast (also featuring Maggie Smith and, briefly, Ralph Fiennes) don’t live up to their star-power. But the real problem with Nanny McPhee And The Big Bang is McPhee herself. We’re supposed to love her, warts and all, but she’s just awful. It’s not her appearance that’s off-putting, but her dour character and Thompson’s overly studied mannerisms. Thompson wrote the screenplay (based on the Nurse Matilda children’s books), and it’s lighter and more kids-friendly than her first McPhee script from 2005. Do I really? If it were up to me I’d just leave you with this whole string of sentences and that’d be about it, but then what’s the point of even reading this review? If you want to watch “Vampire Sucks” take every single god forsaken “Twilight” spoof you’ve ever seen on Youtube, FunnyorDie, and YTMD, mash them together and sit through it. I guarantee that you’ll laugh more in that compilation that you ever will here. I laughed more in that picture of Bella and Edward with Blade in the background preparing to pounce than I ever did here! Not surprisingly “Vampires Suck” is a god fucking awful movie, probably one of the worst movies I’ve seen all year. And I sat through “Cop Out”! What Friedberg and Seltzer do here is what they’ve done since the beginning. They make observations that everyone already has, they point out the obvious that everyone already has, they make jokes about themselves pointing out the obvious, and then joke about making jokes about themselves pointing out the obvious. |
