Five For Five!

YouTube user shessomickey (aka Amanda) posted a video today called "Five For Five". In it, she talks about five topics, each with five points or items within them. The original video is embedded below.

Before we get started, I'd like to say that Amanda is a totally awesome vlogger who I started watching a few weeks ago. She's really smart and interesting and you should definitely go subscribe to her. And if Amanda is reading this, we should totally be best friends ^_^

So without further ado, here's five topics on my mind right now:

1) The Biggest Distractions From Album-Making

a) The Beatles Rock Band - I've been hooked on this game ever since I bought it, but this summer I've got into it in a big way. I usually stick to the drums - partly because I've always wanted to be a drummer and partly because Ringo is my favourite Beatle. One of my biggest achievements of the year was getting "gold stars" (hit around 99% of the beats or higher) on the track "Birthday". Yes, I'm sad.

b) Starkid Productions - as long time followers of me (that sounds so big-headed) may recall, I used to dislike Harry Potter. As such, I never saw A Very Potter Musical until last month when I came across people getting excited about the Sequel. Since that first viewing I must have watched both musicals in their entireties at least five times and I've bought/downloaded both soundtracks. Again, I'm sad.

c) Younger Brother - My younger brother really likes my N64 that I purchased earlier in the year and I can usually count on him to pester me into playing on Perfect Dark multiplayer with him. Admittedly, it *is* a lot of fun.

d) Team Fortress 2 - I never used to be one for PC gaming, mainly because my PC was too crap to play anything fun. Then I got a new laptop and found Steam and all my time vanished. I go through phases of playing particular games way too much. Right now, that game is Team Fortress 2 - they recently updated the Engineer's weapons and he's the character I tend to play as. Funnily enough, I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering at University. Coincidence?

e) My guitar - it seems crazy that the instrument that I'm basing most of my album tracks around could be such a distraction to production, but it is. As soon as it's in my hands, I'll be strumming someone else's song or have the immediate urge to do a cover for YouTube (which is probably distraction no. 6).

2) The Five Best Moments of the Edinburgh Nerdfighter Gathering

a) John Green saying "Hey, I know you. We're friends on the internet!" when I got to the front of the book-signing queue. I just about managed to play it cool. Just.

b) Getting to the top of the hill and seeing the "Scotlandy" view. John's video didn't quite do it justice - that view was breathtaking.

c) Making new friends. I guess that's not really a moment, but it felt so good every time I greeted a new face. I've definitely made some solid friendships that are going to last for a good long while.

d) Playing "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" for those who were around to listen. It seems to have become my trademark cover song over the past few days. The applause after I'd finished made me smile uncontrollably.

e) Singing "Still Alive" (from Portal) with a group of nerdy boys and one nerdy girl. Even if we did struggle to remember a few lines.

3) Five of My Favourite Non-Disney Animated Movies

(this means no Pixar or Nightmare Before Christmas either. Also, I'm doing one-per-studio, otherwise Studio Ghibli would win everything)

a) Princess Mononoke (Studio Ghibli) - referred to as the "Lord of the Rings" of animation when first released and rightly so. It's not the most accessible anime ever but if you let it, it will rock your world.

b) Prince of Egypt (Dreamworks) - when I first saw this film at the age of eight, the epic realisation of stories I had heard at sunday school for years left me totally speechless. At the age of 19, it still holds that same power.

c) Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Aardman) - even if it isn't as good as the original TV shorts, this is still a near-perfect British film.

d) Coraline (Universal) - Neil Gaiman + Henry Selick (director of Nightmare Before Christmas) = total stop-motion awesomeness.

e) Akira (Akira Committee) - if you're into anime in any capacity, chances are you've seen Akira. If not, go check it out. It's a landmark of cinema and deserves its place in animation history. I'm still really tempted to read the 2000+ page manga on which it is based...

4) Five YouTubers You May Not Have Heard Of But Should Be Subscribed To

a) shessomickey - already covered this one. She's awesome.

b) gemllama - kinda like old-school Wheezy Waiter (before the crazy amount of in-jokes), but she's a girl.

c) bandgeek8408 - if you're a book-lover, you simply *have* to be subscribed to Matt. His Books vs Movies series - where he compares books to their movie adaptations - is one of my favourite YouTube shows and his ability to play alternate versions of himself is quite amazing.

d) pineappleboyfilms - host channel of The Platoon of Power Squadron webseries (featuring Craig "Wheezy Waiter" Benzine). In-between episodes, creator Jake Jarvi posts really interesting weekly vlogs about various aspects of film-making.

e) tomoliveras - a YouTube musician with 125 subscribers who deserves at least ten times more. Her cover of The Beatles' "Blackbird" is probably my favourite Beatles cover of all time.

5) Five Places To Find More Of Me On The Internet

c) YouTube (personal and collab)
