Getting Your Car Repaired After an Accident

Many individuals are unsure of how to proceed after their first auto accident. Indeed, it is an overwhelming event, regardless of who is at fault. Anytime an individual gets into an accident, though, there are certain steps he or she should take.

The first thing a person should do is to call the local police. The police will act as mediators as will assign fault in the accident. This is very important, as it determines who must pay for auto repairs; the driver at fault must pay for the other driver's repairs and medical expenses if applicable.

If You Are at Fault

Individuals who are at fault for automobile accidents will have to contact their insurance companies about repairs. In many cases, the at-fault driver's insurance takes care of repairs for both drivers. Whether this is actually the case depends on the individual's insurance policy.

Some at-fault drivers may not have clauses in their policies that cover their own auto damages. In these cases, the individual will have to pay for his or her own auto repairs out of pocket.

If You Are Not at Fault

Individuals who are not at fault for automobile accidents must contact the other drivers' insurance agents. After contacting the agent, the insurance company will send an inspector to estimate the damage the person's car received. The sum attached to this estimate is the maximum amount that the insurance company will pay to have the car repaired.

After the inspector, sometimes called the adjuster, gives his or her opinion, the driver is free to take his or her automobile to a repair shop. In many cases, the insurance company will recommend a repair shop because they trust that shop's work. Drivers are advised to use the recommended shops.

In the event you suffer an injury in a car accident that is not your fault, you may be entitled to financial compensation beyond what the insurance company grants you. Discuss your case with the experienced Milwaukee insurance claims attorneys of Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C. for more information.
