Muscles flex in space, a fake vampire stares from afar. Mermaids wash up on the beach while hand-painted film animates to a blaring Moog synthesizer soundtrack.

The Stranger is a collaboration between painter Patrick Brennan and multimedia artist JD Walsh. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a video that references experimental cinema by using both contemporary and historical practices. On one hand, found YouTube footage signifies the current landscape of media distribution and calls to attention the peculiarities of moving images today. Meanwhile, the material investigations of Stan Brakhage and the symbolism of Kenneth Anger are also clearly referenced in the work. The result is a media collage where the ordinary is manipulated until it creates an homage to dark worlds, mystery, and psychedelia. An eclectic group of objects alongside the video display these strategies at work across media.
