Netflix releases iPhone, iPod touch app for instant streaming

Netflix -- the Los Gatos online DVD rental pioneer -- today released an app that puts its instant streaming service on Apple's iPhone and iPod touch.

The app is a free download from Apple's App Store, with movies and TV shows available to Netflix subscribers who pay $8.99 a month or more.

"Apple has changed the game for mobile devices," Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings said in a statement this morning. "We're excited that our members can now carry Netflix around in their pockets and instantly watch movies and TV shows streamed from Netflix right to their iPhone or iPod touch."

According to a news release, movies and TV shows on the app can be watched over Wi-Fi and 3G wireless connections.

Netflix in recent months has been putting more emphasis on its "Watch Instantly" streaming service, which lets viewers watch content on computers, mobile devices such as Apple's iPad, and TVs connected to video game consoles and other consumer electronics products.

The company has made deals with Hollywood studios and production houses for rights to titles such as "Iron Man 2," "Nip/Tuck," "Veronica Mars" and "The Godfather" movies.

At 8:23 a.m. PDT, Netflix stock was at $126.29, up $2.04, or 1.6 percent.
