Origami

After an afternoon of photo snapping, we decided to go to Origami, a sushi restaurant located at Ridgedale Mall. I haven't had sushi in a while and we both really liked this place as one of the many good-sushi restaurants in the area, next to Fujiya.

Jeff ordered the Crunchy Roll and a Spider Roll while I chose the Yo-Yo Maki and asked to bring the Halibut cheek as my appetizer. I've never had their Halibut cheek here before so I was under the impression that I will be presented with a whole head of fish where you scout for the flesh to devour around the cheek. They offered this fish head at Fujiya and it was absolutely delightful.

I was dissapointed when it came. I was expecting a fish head but what I got was a few nuggets of lightly fried meat, surrounded with three types of mushrooms -- Enoki, Shitakee and Chantrelle -- and Cherry Tomatoes in a clear broth of what I can sense is infused with butter, sake, ginger and garlic, garnished with lemon wedges. To my surprise it was not bad. The cheek-nuggets have the similar texture of crab but a bit tougher. I finished it either way.

My Yo-Yo Maki was good. It would be better if I hadn't caught a slight hint of wasabi in my roll. I am not a fan of Wasabi, may be odd for a sushi lover. The lobster was enveloped with rice, nori, thinly slice of buttery avocado (they fillet this so thinly, it's amazing they can keep it from falling apart as they roll it) nested on a bed of sweet soy sauce and topped with tempura crunchies. Altough the texture is buttery and velvety, thanks to the avocado and the mayo, the lobster was lost in all.

Jeff's Spider Roll is just the usual lightly fried softshell crab. Can't really mess this one up as they offer these in almost all of the sushi restaurants. His Crunchy Roll however was definitely right up my palate. His shrimp and rice was rolled in roes. I love roes, I love fish eggs. I love the textures of popping each tiny little eggs in my mouth to savor it's liquid of lightly salty taste of the sea. I should keep this one dish in mind the next time I come here as Jeff would keep my Yo-Yo Maki in mind the next. He loves Wasabi.
