I have tried several options and combinations to setup Windows 8 as a VM in my Win-7 laptop. Below is what succeeded finally.
My system configuration:
Windows 7 64 bit with 8 GB RAM and Core-i5
What you need:
2GB free to allot to VM and interest to setup win-8
Here is what you need to do-
- Download Windows 8 Setup from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/br229516
- Setup VMPlayer 4.0 in your system
- This is not available as a separate download. You need to download install VMWare Workstation 8.0 from http://downloads.vmware.com/d/info/desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_workstation/8_0 This is not free but the VMPlayer 4.0 which comes along with this is free. So later you can disable vmware workstation services and just use vmplayer
- Open VMPlayer and create new VM
- select Windows 7 x64 as OS type
- allot 12+ GB hard disk
- allot 2BM RAM
- CD/DVD settings > Select ISO image file you downloaded
- close
- Open newly created VM
- Now the setup will start automatically
- Follow the installation wizard
- Finally
- Explore yourself [It comes with Visual Studio 2011 express] :-)
Thanks for reading.
Note:The same steps are valid for 32 bit setup as well
