ELGIN, Ill. (CBS/STMW) ― Two mentally handicapped women were brutally attacked in their northwest suburban residence during a home invasion early Wednesday.
Elgin police say anyone that preys on the truly helpless, they fear will strike again. They are on a mission to find the man responsible for the attack.
Elgin police are asking for the community’s help and have released a sketch of the suspect in the home invasion about 4 a.m. in the 1600 block of Maple Street.
The adult female occupants in their 30s were beaten at their home by a suspect described as African American, bald, having a muscular build and over 6 feet. He was wearing a white t-shirt at the time of the attack.
“These victims are mentally handicapped which makes this crime particularly egregious,” said Elgin Police Lt. Glenn Theriault. “We want the community to notify us immediately if they were aware of anyone in the area fitting the description at the time of the attack.”
Theriault said the victims called 911 and were taken to area hospitals where they were treated and released. He could not comment on what was taken from the home due to the ongoing investigation.
“It’s cases like this that really hit us hard; cases involving children, the elderly, and most importantly the mentally challenged,” said Theriault. “Really just egregious crimes. And they’re ones that we don’t let up on. We’re gonna hunt this guy down and we’re gonna find him.”
