The terrible plight of a Rhondda family and a disabled victim facing homelessness

The update on a terrible situation facing the brave victim of a nasty road accident and the ongoing plight of the Rhondda family involved.

I am saddened to have to read about the ongoing plight of Kelvin Palmer and his family.I had hoped all this dreadful mess and situation had been resolved ages ago. I had the pleasure of meeting with this brave gentleman and his wife some years back. Both also attended the 'Question the Cabinet' meeting at the Coliseum Aberdare in October 2008 with a hope we would be listened to and helped in our respective situations.

It was understood by all those who took the trouble to attend this Councils public meeting  that some good things would come out of the meeting by people highlighting concerns and putting problems directly to the Cabinet. Also that Cabinet Members would either get back to people or ensure matters were passed on as they should be or some kind of help would be forthcoming. However reality proved to be something else entirely.

People who were there will remember Mr Palmer bravely raised their situation clearly with full Cabinet at the meeting and had a lot of  public support.I am so very sorry to learn he can no longer speak and I have no doubt the stress has a great bearing on matters.Trying to fight for some justice is stressful enough and Mr Palmer hasnt had an easy time of this either by the seems of things .Without everything else he has to endure and struggle with.So why hasnt the Council or anyone else for that matter done anything constructive to help Mr Palmer to return to live in the Rhondda and be closer to his family ?I think its appalling this family are left struggling through no fault of their own as if they havent been through enough now this poor man is facing homelessness.

Mr Palmer is now 52 yrs of age so he now comes under the 'Older Persons' criteria as we do. Cold comfort for him no doubt ( as it is for us ) that long serving Cabinet Member Cllr Mike Forey who spent a long time talking to Mr Palmer after the public meeting taking copious notes is RCTCBCs 'Champion'.Why hasnt he stepped in and done anything constructive regarding the housing dilemma? Why hasnt the Cabinet done anything to help rehouse Mr Palmer? They know all about him they cannot dispute that can they? With regard to Social Services and Shelter Cymru:

Mrs Palmer, a teacher in Treorchy, said: “Shelter Cymru and social services are talking about putting him in a B&B which would be totally inadequate for someone in his fragile state – a vulnerable disabled diabetic in a wheelchair.

Both were involved in my mess in 1999 and for some years too - more on this to come. So I hope that will be a warning to this family as to what to expect as nothings changed by the seems of things.

They always say there is always someone far worse off than yourself and I think this sad situation more than supports that statement. My thoughts are with the Palmer family and I just hope that someone somewhere finally shows some compassion, humanity and common sense in all this as they have waited and suffered for long enough.I also wish them all the very best in their forthcoming court case and hope they dont get let down by the system which seldom seems to dispense fairness or justice these days unfortunately.

'You can tell the true nature of any society by the way it treats its most vulnerable' - Quite.
