Repo Men: Movie Review

Haven’t reviewed any movies in a while now, nothing since Inception I think. Hasn’t been a ground-breaking year for movies, quite disappointing. Not that I’ve been making much of an effort to be winning tickets or going out to catch movies for that matter.

Got tickets for Repo Men off UIP via Kel Li (mucho thanks (:p )

Directed by Miguel Sapochnik, a pretty foreign movie director to me, and starring Jude Law, whom I last saw in Sherlock Holmes, and the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (a truly strange movie, trust me), Forest Whittaker (saw him in Last King Of Scotland, Vantage Point),Alice Braga (Predator, the female lead in I am Legend – one of my favorites) and Liev Schreiber, (Salt, Sabre Tooth in X Men:Origins).

As the name crudely suggests, Law and Whittaker play the pair of ruthless best friends, Remy and Jake, repo (repossession) men for the Union ie the government. They do not handle reacquiring houses and property however, instead specializing in retrieving organs from people who do not meet their installments on time. And no, the people they do it to rarely survives. Remy eventually becomes one of these people, having an electronic heart put into him when an accident occurs. And like the others, begins falling behind on payments. He runs, and meets Beth (Braga), and together try to beat the system.

A fairly easy to follow plot. Liked the music selection in some of the scenes. Law and Whittaker play very convincing best friends, but age is evidently beginning to catch up with Law. Was slightly draggy in some parts of the movie, and the fighting and guns are nothing to brag about (if you want to watch nothing but guns, bullets and stuff blowing up, catch the Expendables). Law had a nice knife-wielding fight scene though, leaving a corridor full of other repo men dead.

There’s also a nice underlying message surrounding the movie: loving your job, and how what you do really defines you. “A job’s a job, right?” There’s even a bit of Inception thrown in, which would leave most moviegoers a bit annoyed at the end of the movie. (probably shouldn’t have said that, it’s like a little spoiler alerady) But the movie’s out tomorrow anyway, so do get around to watching it!

My rating: 3 / 5 stars
