Who or What You Pole For

*This post is directed at a Christian audience. Please don't read if religious topics offend you.*

I recently read a blog post that, in a nutshell, was about no longer apologizing for pole dancing and just doing it for yourself, and for no one else.

Most of me was saying "bravo" - it was a beautiful thing to read, very well-written, very inspiring.

But I think for the Christian polers out there, it would need to be taken a step further.

I love the whole bit about not apologizing for pole dancing - I could blog on that topic anytime. I think Christians in particular feel the need to justify and apologize for their hobby, and sometimes do so from both the Christian and non-Christian sides. I'm sure most of us have stammered and stuttered trying to explain to someone - no matter their faith - how we reconcile our dancing and our beliefs and end up trying to make excuses like "Oh I don't do that kind of pole dancing, I just do it for fitness" and blah blah blah. But really, we don't need to do that.

Seriously. We don't need to explain ourselves. We don't owe anyone an explanation and our Lord is our only judge anyway. If we have no reason to feel guilty in front of God, we have no reason to feel any guilt in front of another human. 'Nuff said.

The part where the blogger said we only should pole for ourselves is where I stopped nodding to myself as I read. The poster was basically saying when you're on the pole, it's just you and the pole and you can get lost in it all. I'm not saying that's not true, but I want to expand on that.

Yes, pole is a great way to relax, shut out the rest of the world and your worries and stresses and get lost in music and dance. It can be like meditation, sort of... *cocks eyebrow and looks around to see who understood what I meant by that* Nothing wrong with that. It's awesome stuff, and the post was written very poetic-like and conveyed the emotions of getting caught up in the moment of pole dance very well.

And I'm not disagreeing with any of it.

The part that I wanted to add is that for us believers, it's not just us and the pole - It's us, the pole, and the Lord. We shouldn't just dance for ourselves. Not that every single dance has to be an all-out, put-on-the-Michael-W.-Smith-music praise dance, either. I don't like the idea of just dancing for the sake of ourselves... Turning the attention solely on ourselves automatically means turning the focus away from God, and it becomes easier for us to fall prey to ourselves and the Enemy.

Technically, every breath we take and every action is supposed to be for the glory and in service of our God and Savior - and pole is no exception. Yes, that can be very difficult to do - believe me, I know. I'm not trying to preach - just trying to help support because I know I can't be the only one. It's all easier said than done, unfortunately, as is a lot of other things in the Christian walk. I'm thinking about sticking a little reminder card in my pole case or hanging something on my wall to help me remember that it's not just about me. I'll have to try that... If someone tries this or has their own way of keeping God in the picture, please share!

So yes, when you put up the pole, put on the music, start to dance, and get lost inside yourself, go for it - but when you do that, make sure that God is in your heart; that way when you get lost inside yourself, He is there, too.
