"Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya kun" review

Updated 15/7/10

There is only one thing that comes to mind when I watch this series, and after six episodes of nonstop action and LOL moments, I really want to scream "WTF" as loud as I can. Seriously! This anime romance/ecchi/harem/comedy has an unbelievably...what's the right word...unique...storyline...here is a synopsis via Wikipedia:

Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun's story revolves around Shungo Ninomiya, a male high school student trained in difficult hand-to-hand combat. He lives in a huge house with his older sister Ryoko, who is almost always gone on some dangerous mercenary mission. One day, his sister sends Mayu and Mikihiro Tsukimura (Mayu's older brother) to live with him to help Mayu overcome her fear of men. This is accomplished by making Mayu and Shungo share the same room, bathe together and even sleep together in the same bed. Making things more awkward, Reika Houjou, the student-council chair, is blackmailed into becoming their maid due to a video that Ryoko recorded, in which she tries to seduce Shungo.

First Impressions:

I mean, really, a girl who has some kind of men phobia, a guy who has super ninja skills who has to protect this "man phobia" girl after being forced to by the girl's strange supernatural power brother, who suggested that they stay over at Ninomiya's house by Ninomiya's sister, who also happens to have super gun skills, crazy huh? And Ninomiya and his sister just happen to live in some huge mansion, and for some reason (his is the confusing part, maybe I missed something) Reika doesn't feel happy about Mayu being so close to Ninomiya (it ends up she was the childhood sweetheart that Ninomiya always had dreams about, very good aspect of the series), so she has a competition with Mayu, but loses all of them because her figure isn't as good as Mayu's, and she is forced to become a maid at Ninomiya's house, even though she's the successor to Houjo Corporation, apparently some ginormous company in Japan.

Well, one thing's for sure, the plot is just weird, but the comedy level oh my god, it's out of this world. Honestly, after episode six, I laughed so hard I started crying and I ended up choking (hehe...). Alright I'm going to spoil a bit of the plot so don't read on if you want to watch the series! In episode five, the whole gang travels to the beach (actually, a private island owned by Ninomiya's family, again, how are they so rich?) for a one night vacation, but end up being attacked by an entire army of soldiers who tie them up and try to destroy them. Now, throughout the series Ninomiya's sister is always filming him and Mayu together, because he's supposed to be helping Mayu "train" to lose her men phobia. The things they do include sleeping together just to name one. So, a super powerful fighter girl appears and starts to fight Ninomiya, but misses a step and ends up having her mask cracked by Ninomiya's fist, revealing that it was his sister, and that the whole thng was a huge setup/prank. You hav nonidea how epic that scene was, seriously, I don't think ONE person in the entire world would've ever though it to be a trick by his sister to test them. Absolutely gold. Gosh it really started getting serious, losing all the comedy aspect and romance aspect in episode six, only to find out that everything was a joke and have everything return back to normal! Ahhhh that was funny, I think it's one of the best anime scenes ever, that scene in episode six is truly truly priceless.

I've decided to include all the character synopsis via Wikipedia too, because his series is one series that you have to understand the characters in order to understand the plot.

Shungo Ninomiya (二ノ宮峻護 Ninomiya Shungo)

Voiced by: Junji Majima

Shungo, the main character, is a talented martial artist. It seems that he knew Mayu and Reika when they were kids but only Reika, Mayu, and several other characters remembers this, yet remaining oblivious. He also seems to show extreme self-restraint against any physical or otherwise improper interactions with women, as the girls in his school are frequently trying to get him to have intercourse with them (or at least sexually tease him anyways to try his restraint as much as possible), but as of yet, he has done his best to run away. In fact he shows almost no interest at all in women with the exception of Mayu and Reika.

Mayu Tsukimura (月村真由 Tsukimura Mayu)

Voiced by: Mai Kadowaki

Mayu is a girl suffering from androphobia who is sent by Ryoko Ninomiya to live with Shungo to get over her fear. She and her brother are succubi, which in this series refers to people with special abilities of attracting members of the opposite sex and feeding on their life force. However, Mayu cannot control her power, which causes her to be chased by men often. She frequently finds herself getting into situations where she puts herself into embarrassing situations, for example, getting sprayed with water from the sink while wearing a tight white shirt or frequently falling on top of Shungo in suggestive positions. She is horrible at cleaning up or tidying up places. She binds up the fringes of her hair on each side with a pair of bat's wing-like hair-clips. Though she is terribly clumsy, which often gets her into bad situations, Mayu is very lucky, which serves to bring her out of said situations. Mayu is in love with Shungo. It is later revealed that Mayu, Reika, and Shungo are actually childhood friends.

Reika Hōjō (北条麗華 Houjou Reika)

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro

Reika is the student council president at Shungo's school, and is the heiress to/executive of her father's vast corporate empire. She becomes Shungo's maid after Ryōko threatens to spread a video of her over the web. She loves Shungo and is envious of Mayu's large breasts. She had a close childhood relationship with Shungo in the past, somewhat like lovers in fact, although Shungo only vaguely remembers this in his dreams. It has been shown that, like Mayu, Reika is also a succubus. She has symptoms of BPD, that apparently the outer Reika talks to sometimes. The other side of her introduces herself as the darkness within Reika, and while the "normal" Reika speaks with an aristocratic air (by using Japanese speech that is reasonably too formal), once the "inner" Reika surfaces, the formal speech format disappears and Reika speaks in a more blunt manner. The "inner" Reika is also willing to do anything to get Shungo.

Ryōko Ninomiya (二ノ宮涼子 Ninomiya Ryoko)

Voiced by: Michiko Neya

Ryōko is Shungo's older sister. She is also a skilled martial artist and sometimes brings a camera to tape Shungo and Mayu together and provoke Shungo. She likes to mess around with her younger brother and the other girls most of the time for her own personal enjoyment.

Mikihiro Tsukimura (月村美樹彦 Tsukimura Mikihiro)

Voiced by: Ken Narita

Mikihiro is Mayu's older brother. He is an incubus, the male counterpart of a succubus. He is very sneaky and devious, although not evil, and good at manipulating others to do what he wants, like Reika for instance. He seems to have known Ryōko for a long time, as they are often seen working together, even in flashbacks. In the anime, it is revealed that he owns a wheat farm, an animal ranch, and a fishing boat.

Mitsuru Hosaka (保坂光流 Hosaka Mitsuru)

Voiced by: Kouki Miyata

Mitsuru, otherwise known chiefly as Hosaka, is an employee of the Hōjō organization. He is a student council member, and Reika's main assistant. He is prone to being slapped and beaten by Reika. Nonetheless, he demonstrates the ability tohis own strengths and abilities when he leaps off the balcony of a multi-story building, but is simply docile towards Reika. His speed, power and agility also seems to surpass Shungo, but his endurance is low, so if a punch lands, he falls much quicker. He also, like Shungo, seems to not be affected by Mayu's succubus powers for reasons unexplained.

Shinobu Kirishima (霧島 しのぶ Kirishima Shinobu)

Voiced by: Saeko Chiba

Kirishima is a maid in the service of the Houjou family. She sees it as her duty to watch over Reika. She carries a wakizashi sword. Unlike Hosaka who uses relatively casual (though not rude) speech patterns with Reika, Kirishima uses only Japanese honorifics towards Reika, but quickly reverts back to blunt speech towards Shungo, whom she thinks is not worthy of Reika, and is always trying to "execute" him. It is hinted that she may have a bit of a crush on Shungo, though she is unwilling to admit it.

Wow, what should I give it so far, since I'm halfway done already. Well, considering it's a short series, I guess it is moving just a bit slow, character growth is almost non-existent, and even though there is a bit of fan service, it doesn't feel natural enough...with that said however, the comedy aspect of the series really boosts everything up, and lets you forgive it's slight imperfections. I'll say, an 8/10 based off the first half of the series, with six more episodes to go!

Please stay updated as I finish the series very soon (thank god it's on Youtube, no need to waste time downloading, converting, transferring, synching, etc.)!

Midway Recap + Final Thoughts:

What an unbelievable series, U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E.

I decided to finish the last six episodes, even though I wanted to sleep earlier today, but I'm so happy I didn't, because this series is so damn good it blasts my mind with a nuke. As the series progresses, more and more action and comedy arise, it gets better and better and better until it the last second of the last episode. And what's more, everytime a very serious action scene (they aren't just silly childish ones, they're quite intense actually) occurs, at the end, it always ends up being a complete parody, twisting the scene and easing all of the tension built up from the action, turning it into tear-producing saliva-choking LOL comedy. I love how this series is able to do that, and there is not one series I have watched or even heard about that manages to have such a storyline, going back and forth between intense serious action and crazy humour. Some may say that it's rather confusing and doesn't work at all, however, from what I've seen, I can confidently conclude that this is in fact not the case, and that's what makes his series stand outnsonmuch, it's truly a genre of it's own. Another aspect that really made this series shine, was that it still kept it's romantic/ecchi/harem genre traits very evident, but with it's own twist. There is barely any fan service (there is full nudity but nothing showing though), but sexual themes were always being brought up or acted out, and it really helped keep the series on track, since it IS still a harem/romance genre. And there was even a manipulating bitch that showed up, typical of all romance comedies! What made me rate his series 11/10 though, is not just because his series is unique, definitely not, that's not he only aspect. OHHH THE ENDING! BEST ENDING EVER!!! Mayu had begun to lose life force, and Reika had been taken over by her succubus side, trying to kill Mayu to obtain Shungo. Right before Reika's bodyguard (forgot his name, not important anyway) was about to kill Shungo (Reika had ordered him to kill Shungo because he was going to save Mayu instead of being with her, which made her angry), Reika snapped out of her succubus inside and returned back to normal, just in time to snatch Shungo away from a falling metal chandelier. However, Reika's bodyguard was not listening to her, and was still obeying succubus Reika's request to kill Shungo. Just as Reika's bodyguard was about to kill Shungo, Mayu stepped in front of him and absorbed the full impact of the blow, killing her. She was out of life force, so Shungo needed to kiss her, but Reika would not let him, because of the possiblity that he may die due to Mayu losing control and taking ALL his life force away accidentally. By now, the atmosphere was very very serious, and considering it was right after an action scene too. So, Reika and Shungo quarrelled, and Reika accidentally fell over, landing on Mayu's face, and kissing her. To my surprise, and the character's surprise, Mayu woke up again, as if nothing ever happened. She saw Reika kissing her and, embarrased and outraged, called her a lesbian, and everything turned back to normal. That's an example of the "serious then outrageously funny" scenes I was talking about above. Now, that was the leadup to the ending, now, the real ending. Everyone was walking to school together, and Mayu really wanted to kiss Shungo. As she went up to kiss him, Mayu's friend called out "ohio!" to them, making Mayu accidentally miss his cheek and kiss him on the lips. This is the scene I was waiting for, and it was so perfectly and flawlessly set up too. It was obvious Mayu was deeply in love with Shungo, but she never had the chance to tell him. I'm just so happy that she finally let her feelings out, it's as if the whole series was geared towards that scene, and everything before was just preparation. But, of course, being a succubus, she made him faint again, which is another serious romance scene twisted into a funny scene. After he woke up, Reika's boyguard said to him:

"Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya kun" - "Our condolences, Ninomiya kun"

And that's how the series ended with the biggest bang I have ever seen, EVER SEEN in any series! Only 12 episodes? WHO CARES!!! There's so much action and humour it feels like 24 episodes!

So, this will be my first 11/10, and probably my last one, because I don't think there will ever be a series that can have such an amazingly weird plot with such great humour, and have such a fantastically out-of-this-world ending!

IT'S ALREADY 2:46!!! BUT I DON'T CARE!!!

Shungo Ninomiya, thank you for such an amazing series!!! Arigatou gozaimasu!!!

Oyasumi, minna san! I really enjoyed watching this series, I hope you will too!
