Miss Universe: She f**ked it up

Miss Mexico won the Miss Universe crown during a glittery pageant in Las Vegas held tonight. She clinched the title over other 82 candidates from around the world.

Miss Jamaica took first runner-up, followed by Miss Australia, Miss Ukraine, and Miss Philippines.

Although this is the first time that the Philippines placed in the top five in 11 years, let alone in the semifinals, many of Venus Raj's fans were disappointed after she gave a mediocre answer to an easy question in the final stretch of the pageant.

A judge, William Baldwin, asked her what her biggest mistake in life was so far. Venus, visibly overwhelmed by audience support, gave a somewhat shaky reply, telling him that in her 22 years she hasn't had any major problem because of the support and love of her family.

For pageant enthusiasts, her answer lacked oomph. While she was confident, she also didn't impress the judges and the viewers in the interview portion.

To be honest, I was really psyched that she would make it all the way. When her name was called last during the semifinals, I was out of breath cheering for her. I was also a bit tensed as pageant powerhouses like Venezuela and USA had not been called yet.

During the swimsuit and gown competition, Mexico and Jamaica duked it out in the top with Venus settling third and fifth, respectively. Mexico's victory actually was expected as many bloggers and pageant veterans predicted her as huge Miss Universe 2010favorite.

But of course, for Filipino fans, they were hoping that Venus would be the last woman standing on stage. She has been hyped since winning the Bb. Pilipinas early this year, then stripped of her title until she was reinstated following an uproar in the Philippines.

Because of her popularity, many Filipinos, including T girls and gay guys, flew to Las Vegas to support her. She obviously drew the biggest audience applause among the finalists.

But many of them felt bad after she fucked up the interview. They knew she wouldn't win the crown with such an answer. She ended up fourth runner-up, ending a decade-long drought for a pageant-crazy nation.

The Philippines last placed in 1999 when Miriam Quiambao won first runner-up, a victory that many of her fans believed could have landed her the title if only she didn't clam up in the final question.

Oh well. Like my BFF Em said after Venus' performance, she did very well, considering the struggles she had to go through to get into Miss Universe.

"I'm still happy for Venus on her personal victory. At the very least, she vindicated herself and proved that she deserved the Bb. Pilipinas title. No other Philippines candidates in recent times have reached what she achieved.

"Oh well, how long are we going to wait again until the Philippines even makes it to the semifinals?" Em said.

So, Venus Raj, be proud. You may not win the Miss Universe crown, but in our hearts, you are still our queen. Congratulations to you and to Miss Mexico!
