My car was stolen sometime last week. I don't know when because I rarely use a car in San Francisco. I reported it missing to the police on Sunday. They had no record of it having been found. However, I was just called by the police, who said that it has been found and towed to the impound yard. It now has no wheels, and its windows are smashed. The officer was surprised that the SFPD only just now was notified about it because it was found and towed on Saturday, the day before I reported it missing.
The car is old (1988 Toyota) and was not worth much money before so surely it is a total loss now. But apparently I'm liable for the expense of towing the hulk. If it accumulated parking tickets after being ditched I'm liable for those too. And it's been sitting in the city's impound yard since Saturday accumulating extra fees - large ones from what friends tell me. And now I need to pay to have it towed somewhere.
I'm going to call a salvage yard and see if I can get them to pick it up - I doubt a salvage company would pay enough for the car to make up the cost of getting it out of the hands of the city, but it'll help.
I'm blogging this to ask for advice. Anyone have this problem before? Any thoughts?
