Looking back at the 2000s decade, I noticed that there had been noticeably less Pink Warriors compared to the 80s and 90s. During the 2000s, we had three straight seasons in a row without pink (Gao, Hurri, and Aba). This was a record. And shortly after, pink disappeared again during Gekiranger and Go-onger. Of course, this might just be pure coincidence, but I wanted to examine this.
Why did the 2000s have about twice as less pinks as the 80s and 90s did? Could it be because pink just doesn't sell well? Sentai is a program that was meant for boys after all. I can understand that. As a kid, I might be embarrassed to ask my mom to get me a pink action figure and then to show it off to my friends. XP Does pink sell well? I'm not sure. But if it didn't, I honestly wouldn't be surprised.
If Sentai truly is trying to use Pink less and less, could that also explain the sudden increase of female Yellow Warriors? In the 80s, there were more male Yellow Warriors. In the 90s, it was balanced out. But in the 2000s, there were more female Yellows. Especially in the late 2000s. It's possible that yellow just doesn't seem "girly" as pink does to boys.
To a lesser extent, the 2000s also broke the record for having the most female Blue Warriors. Both the 80s and 90s had one each. While the 2000s had two. Is it possible that the 2010s will feature more female Blue Warriors? Will a female duo of yellow and blue potentially become a common thing?
But overall, why would any of this matter? How come pink wasn't a big deal during the 70s, 80s, or the 90s? Well, maybe they were. Just not to as big of an extent as the 2000s. Times and fads are always changing. In the older sentai, pink was always portrayed as the single female warrior to help attract female audiences. And it was taken a step further with Bioman, when we got two female warriors. And it's possible that things just burned out for pink as the 2000s arrived.
Mecha is another thing. If you look at all the mecha in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, none of the mecha belonging to the Pink Warriors are ever a solid pink color. It's usually some other solid color (usually white). At most, the mecha would just have a pink stripe on it somewhere. It's possible that kids just don't want to see pink on their combined mecha (might look ugly :P ). In the mid and late 2000s, that's when we start seeing more solid pink colored mecha. Are these selling well? Hmmm.
So overall, I'm not entirely sure what's happening to pink (if anything is happening at all), but I'm sure pink won't disappear or anything. But it's possible that pink might end up switching places with White and start appearing as a color that appears once every few seasons.
