Tak Ada Niat Pun Nak Stereotype, Tapi. . . . .

I dare say, this ______ happens almost everywhere. If you're a girl/woman, and the one behind the counter, the one who's serving you shares the same gender, automatically you'd be treated like ________. (Konon menjaga tatasusila di bulan Ramadhan. :P)

I read this one post on my lecturer's blog long time ago and out of blue, I had a sudden thought of it just now. I ought to share it here.

I feel you guys if you say that some people treat you with no respect. I had the honour of having that experience myself this morning. And I felt fuming mad about it. I know I shouldn’t be saying bad things about my work place; I love Unisel by the way. It feels like second home to me. But knowing that some staff can be unfriendly makes me wonder; there could be some truth to what he students have told me earlier – some staff do not practice a student/client friendly approach. I think they should be trained to be polite, kan?

The story begins; I just got in this morning after a three day course on website in Unisel Bestari Jaya. I had fun, seriously! Anyway, that’s not the issue here. So, just as soon as I walked into the faculty, I saw my colleague marking his exam papers. And I thought, “Omaigish, I haven’t taken my exam papers from the exam secretariat yet!”

And so I chucked my stuff on my work desk and headed of to the exam unit (the secretariat had already closed on the last day of the exam). On my way, I called them and asked whether I could come and take my exam papers to be marked. They said that I couldn’t and that I should go settle it with my faculty. Weird huh? I didn’t suspect anything yet. So I just went there to explain in person.

When A***** got there, this is what conspired between her and the staff.

A***** : Cik, nak tanya. Kalau nak amek exam papers mcm mana? Hari tu saya takde 3 hari kat sini sebab ada kursus IT kat BJ (Unisel Bestari Jaya).

Staff 1 : Paper exam dah takley amek. *dengan nada kerek*

A***** : Kenapa tak boleh amek pulak? Saya ada kursus, saya tak ada kat Shah Alam. Tak dapat nak amek hari tu.

Staff 1 : Memang dah takley amek. Apa-apa sekarang sila berurusan dengan AR dan pihak fakulti. *masih kerek*

A***** : *Pelik betullah kataku dalam hati* Saya dari fakulti lah ni. AR saya tak ada, dia cuti. Saya dah tanya A**e, dia kata fakulti mana ada amek pape paper dari sekretariat. *dah mulalah aku nak hangin kan, tapi sabar lagi ni*

The staff called upon her colleague.

A***** : Puan, saya nak amek exam papers saya, hari tu saya tak ada 3 hari kat Shah Alam. Ada kursus kat BJ dan tak dapat nak datang amek exam papers saya.

Staff 2 : Awak kena berurusan dengan fakulti. Unit Exam dah tak bertanggungjawab apa-apa lagi. *in her most authoritative voice*

Time ni gua dah sentap nok. Nak marahkan aku ni muda lagi daripada dia. But I kept on asking.

A***** : Habis tu kalau saya tak boleh amek, paper tu semua dah dilupuskan ke? Papers tu semua dalam simpanan siapa?

Staff 2 : Pihak fakulti akan sediakan paper baru.

Aku semakin kepelikan.

A***** : Hurm. Takpela. Terima kasih.

I stormed off and fumed angrily all the way back to the faculty. What a way to start my Friday morning huh? Soon as I got in, I told my tale to A**e. So, he kindheartedly called the head of the exams unit. I don’t know what the conversation was about. At the same time, I called Kak Yan to tell her. She then called the exam unit as well. And A**e too called the exam unit and you know what he found out?

THEY THOUGHT I WAS A STUDENT!!!

My God!!! Am I supposed to be flattered or insulted by that?

Dorang ingat gua student yang nak merayu nak amek exam semula! KH laaaaaaaaaaaaa.

No wonder I got the cold treatment. So I went back to collect my exam papers and on the way Kak Yan called me and also explained the same thing. They thought that I was a friggin’ STUDENT. Bikin pannnnnnnnaassss gua pagi-pagi Jumaat yang indah niiiiiiiiiii.

When I arrived, the elder staff which had mistakenly gave me the “kerek” treatment apologized for the misunderstanding. The younger one tak minta maaf langsung. Some of my students have better manners than you Missy. But hey, I cooled off a bit after the elder one apologized. So I too kept it professional. Once I settled everything, I politely said thank you and left.

I am not flattered with this mistake; it’s an insult and I’m beginning to worry about it. I get the same treatment when I go to the library, the finance department, the bla bla bla, almost everywhere in the university lah pendek kata. Benci betullah.

Why do some people have to be like that? Just because the person you’re entertaining is a student, then you have to treat them like that is it? Phooey! Nasib baiklah aku ni pangkat lecturer jek. Kalau anda tersalah layan top management macam tu, mistaking them for parents macam mana agaknya ek?

This is all crap lah. Belajarlah berbudi bahasa. Adoi.

Kan dah malu bila dapat tahu saya ni staff.
