Students nowadays have a lot of gadgets, including handphones. A lot of students even have the latest gadgets available on the market.
However, talking on handphones, I believe 99% of students, especially secondary school ones, have one. Would this cause people without handphones to feel left out? I believe so.
In secondary school, handphones are inevitable in our daily lives. We use it to communicate with others, and it can even be our mobile chatting device; something we can use to chat with others on the go. We can also use handphones to "webcam" others nowadays, with new technologies like FaceTime introduced. 3G networks are getting more popular as technologies advance. We can now use our phones as mobile gaming devices too. Phones nowadays would put computers 10 years ago in shame; having specifications that are much better than computers 10 years ago.
21st century kids grow up in technologically-advanced environments. But would this circumstance develop the future generation to be radically reliant on technology? There has been recent reports of over-reliance of mobile phones to the point that students can "die" without their mobile phones. I think this is an unhealthy mindset that had already been instilled our generation. This over-reliance on mobile phones could prove fatal in the near future for these kids.
On top of that, there is an ever-growing number of people who are addicted to computer gaming. These people go to school for the sake of going to school, and go home only to boot up their computer and start gaming. This would cause the student's grades to drop drastically as they do not have the time and concentration to study hard, but only have their mind think about the game and its "strategies". This would not be something very nice, as being couped up in a room playing games for the whole day would be unhealthy for the children, and would even cause them diseases. Their oral communications skills will also decrease as they do not need to talk during the process of playing the games.
One major side effect of hardcore gaming is that people would try to download games through illegal means as they do not have enough money to purchase the games they wanted to play. Some games would cost over a hundred dollars, and some people might not be able to afford it. Hence, this propels them to download the games from the net illegally as they would not need to pay. This is a major issue as this would break the copyright law and result in the offender being jailed and fined. This is applicable to people downloading illegal content too, including people who download music etc.
We are all victim of circumstances. However, would it be more ideal if technology advanced or stayed status quo? Technology advancements do have its pros and cons. Whats your take?
Cheers,
Yu Siang
