Question 2
Should I buy a 2009/2010 bmw 335i?... i have heard that the 335i's have some problems and have VERY high maintenance. I have heard they have problems with their engine and alot of overheating.I would greatly appreciate your opinion and please list the problems they have. Thanks.
Answers
1) If you buy one new, they are supposed to have maintenance packages for the first couple of years.
Depending on how you drive, any vehicle might have engine and cooling system problems. - River Euphrates
2) The problem with BMW's is they use plastic impellers for the water pumps. But... A BMW is worth all the hassle :-)
Just wait until you start cornering... - Nathan Powell
3) I heard a great quote of wisdom a few years ago referring to BMW's/Mercedes/expensive status cars
"If you drive a bmw, you need to have a bmw lifestyle" which means if you are barely making enough for the payment alone, then it is not a good idea - Drizzy Nuggar
4) All BMW's have comparatively high maintenance when considering domestic cars and Japanese imports.
335's do have some problems, which primarily, but not exclusively, plague the '07 model year vehicles. Problems you may run into with the would be failure of parts like the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump), which are known to be faulty (esp. in '07's) and the turbos. Some 335i's have rattling wastegates and eventual wastegate failure, as well as some turbo's prematurely going. The later occurrences are usually related to people overboosting their cars with software or other modifications. Other than those there's really nothing worth mentioning specifically.
All of the above is irrelevant if your buying a car under warranty, which an '09/'10 will be. BMW also has the 4 years no maintenance deal that comes with cars under warranty and it is fully transferable.
I own a M3 and a 335 and they are both GREAT cars. My only recommendation to folks looking for a nice used BMW is to get it PPI(private part inspected) or in your case it will be dealer certified and buy with remaining warranty.
Enjoy the ultimate driving experience! - tenfifteen
5) You heard right. Check out the 2011 135i, it does not have as much room but it is a much better performer. - Halcyon
6) if repair costs and other costs are a concern of yours from a price point of view a bmw is not the car for you. if you are just worried about getting a good car and dont want a lemon i would say this would be a good buy for you, its a beast. although other people on here know way more than i do about maitenance issues, i just really like that car.
-johnny wadd - Johnny Wadd
7) get the newer one cause the warranty that comes with every BMW is 4 years/50k miles so yeah get the 2010 and ive had mine for about 2 years and had no problems what so ever even oil changes r free at BMW dealerships....it all depends on how u take care of it....and btw y dont u hear BMWs being recalled and pretty much every Toyota has been recalled and btw two models got recalled in the past week - eaglestotheSBin2010

Question 3
Is a BMW 840CI v8 high maintenance?... I'm looking into buying an 840ci, automatic, 90k miles on it, I just want to know if insurance is particularly high and if maintenance is also expensive
It's selling for 10 grand but I'd be able to invest in repairs not including insurance for up to 20k, is it still an unhealthy deal?
Answers
1) ALL BMW's are - mark
2) the e31 is high maintenance and costly if you need to buy spares for it(if you can find them). - Leeroy
3) The E31 chassis is one of the most labor intensive and unreliable that BMW ever made. Unless the car has been maintained properly, and has had a lot of preventative maintenance done to it, you'll be stuck with a huge headache. Also, stay away from the automatic.... Oh, and it's a 4.0l V8 RWD sports car, you tell me if insurance is expensive or not. - Louis
4) both will be expensive. if cost is an issue a bmw is not the right car for you.
-johnny wadd - Johnny Wadd
5) While it's less intensive than the 850, it's still going to be a small fortune to maintain and repair. Think twice before buying this car. It's a hot car, one of my fav bmw's. - jay
6) Investing implis you will get a return. If this is the car you have always wanted and you are prepared to basically piss away $30 grand then go for it. Just keep in mind you will never see the money again. If your ok with that then theres no reason not to. The E31 is still a great looking car but may cost the 20k to get back to tip top condition plus a grand or more a year to keep it there. I work on BMWs so i get discount part prices as well as do the work myself. I still wouldn't get one. - eeyore

Question 4
How do I upgrade my 1988 BMW M3?... I am 17 and have recently purchased a second hand 1988 BMW M3. It's in pretty good shape but pretty much all the bits are getting on a bit and the engine is sounding a bit ratty. What I want to do is take it into a BMW garage and have it completely re tuned and refurbished with some newer bits ( to compete with my rich friends 2006 Audi S4). I know it will be expensive but I just wanted to hear what you guys have to say about it. I am a definite car man but I'm not that mechanical about them so any Input you people have is useful.
Both of your answers are very good. I hate people who buy a really nice, old, classic car then ruin it by putting neon lights on it and stuff like that. Thanks for the help.

1) Pelican Parts has a good website with a lot of Tech info on the 3-series cars. AAA offers a bumper-to-bumper assessment for around $99, and I recommend joining them (or similar) for the Tow Insurance and auto-related services they offer.
BMW's in general are difficult to work on, since the simplest chores take an additional 3 hours of removing parts just to get to whatever you are supposed to be working on. Then it needs to be put back together. A lot of 'star' wrenches and some special tools are needed, depending on the task. That is why the shop rates are so high.
Join a BMW fanatic website, buy the Shop Manual, and meet up with some local guys who are into the older Beemers who can share their tips and tools. If you see fixed-up BMW like yours parked in your neighborhood, tuck a note under his windshield wiper, compliment his car, ask him if he knows of any local clubs or groups, and leave your name and phone number.
This should get you started in the right direction. - Suki
2) If I were you, I'd consider it a sort of restoration. So you may want to look at fixing any interior issues, no aftermarket cheesery though, resist trying to over mod it or "rice" it up, just resist doing that.
You'll get much more respect from serious BMW enthusiasts if you actually attempt to restore it to its original M3-goodness.
Look into though, upgrading suspension parts, they may need updating to new parts, shocks, control arms, bushings, that sort of thing. Also, clean the car fully, interior complete clean up, engine bay, exterior, etc. Remove any tuner stickers, just attempt to make it stock.
When you service and maintain it, take it to a BMW specialist, this is a must. Make sure you use OEM parts, ask any and all questions, if the mechanic gets annoyed, move along, they won't do a proper job. Because if they aren't enthused about working on it and just want to do fast big jobs, that means they don't share your passion and at the core, may be just after more jobs rather than a customer they appreciate. In a way, the shop should have a good attitude and be on the same page about making the M3 great again.
DIY is fine to save, but trust me, its better for a pro to do it, and along the way, you learn also.
Don't angel eye, halo it, don't over place M3 stickers or extra badges, think classic BMW restoration at this point if in fact its an original E30 M3. A very special car. - BimmerCat!
3) Adding to what the other answers have already said, you should know that the M3-specific parts for the E30 are VERY expensive and rare. Most of the exterior panels (fenders, for example) are no longer available new.
The S14 motor in the E30 M3 is also notoriously finicky and expensive to repair. To work with this engine you need to know the tricks.
If you're serious about this car, I would strongly encourage you to get involved with the E30 M3 community. Take a look at these websites as a start:
www.bimmers.com/m3/
www.s14.net
m3forum.net
www.E30tech.com
If you decide after some research that the car is not for you (no shame in that; it's a daunting car from a maintenance perspective for a 17 year old, and potentially an expensive one), you should know that it's a very desirable car to the BMW enthusiast community. You should have no trouble selling it if you advertise it through the right channels.
Good luck! - Martin B
4) Since your british this may be a bit more difficult but, sell the BMW and buy a Mustang GT, that will kick the crap out of the S4 at less than half the money and with twice the style. - Halcyon
5) i also have a e30 m3 the fist thing is change the timing chain tensioner but replace with a e46 m3 tensioner as they are spring based, when adjusted it locks to that possition. - Leeroy
