Kal Bishop's 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template. Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.
[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].
THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY
HEROINE'S JOURNEY
It is a mistake to believe that the Heroine's Journey is separate and distinct from the Hero's Journey. The Journey is about pulling the Hero through a Process of Transformation, which is not gender (or culturally) specific.
In Million Dollar Baby (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 2004) - though Maggie and Frankie both have their challenges, the process towards Apotheosis and beyond is the same.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES:
*****Old World Capabilities - Road of Trial (1)*****
Some capability that the Hero possesses is made explicit. Often this capability has been learned in the Hero's Ordinary World. In An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Zach doesn't like being taught martial arts, a skill he had to master to survive in the PI.
Sacrificial Lambs. During Trial two, it is common for Sacrificial Lambs to be sacrificed. It is here [trial 1] that their weakness is demonstrated.
Magical Gift. The Hero may be given a capability as a Magical Gift by one or other Mentor.
*****Ordinary World of the Transformation Mentor*****
We are often privy to the New World of the Transformation Mentor. In Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indy and Marion visit Sallah at home with his wife and children in Cairo.
Learning about the New World. The Transformation Mentor will teach the Hero about the World of the Transformation and how to survive in it. In Harry Potter, Harry always learns new tricks from his teachers. In The Matrix (1999), the Morpheus teaches Neo about the Matrix and how it came to be. In Scarface (1983), "said Tony Frank that he can survive in the long term, drug dealers, in contrast to most do not last the children grew up. http://consultantstrial.blogspot.com/2010/08/travelling-stage-hero-188-mono-myth.html
