On the last day of my vacation, I went home - DUH!
It was a long, terrible drive. Even though nothing bad happened. But GAH that drive sucks! When I hit Champaign, which is like thirty light-years longer to get through than expected, I was just ready to be done already. When I got to Indy, I was crabbed out. Finally got past Indy and knew the home stretch was in sight. Made really good time, got there an hour before expected even with the time change, but I still wish I could tesseract between Ohio and Iowa. I would provide nonstop service! The universe's bus driver.
SO. Here are the weird things I saw in the car on my way to and home from Iowa.
1. Full gallon of apple cider lying on the side of Interstate 80, appearing unharmed. But definitely discarded.
2. A not-seemingly-totally-trashy lady bring her absolutely emaciated daughter into the school's main office to ask about a school calendar. I am not kidding, this little girl looked like Escape From Sobibor. Like, seriously emaciated. But her mother looked perfectly healthy.
3. People being interviewed about the no-tax weekend that Iowa has apparently instituted in my absence. Should I take this as a sign that after I left they needed to boost their GDP?
4. A fake Elvis performance advertised at Jumer's. What does Elvis have to do with LeClaire, Iowa???
5. A lady advertising her 35th birthday in the Cedar Rapids Gazette's 'society' section. She looked like a man. REALLY REALLY like a man. Jennifer thought so too. And she had her birthday gala at a biker bar. Yum.
6. A fox walking out of the woods during the afternoon. Not all that uncommon in the Fox River valley, but still jolting to see.
7. No one in Garden Prairie. I am not kidding, that place is Rock N Roll Heaven, Oregon.
8. A waitress who looked 35, was missing important teeth, and had the names of her daughters and her two grandchildren tattooed on her forearm between vining flower armbands.
9. An Aveda salon and all-inclusive wedding "resort" out in bumble-fumble Indiana, twenty minutes southwest of Indy. The Aveda part was what surprised me.
10. Two exits for Rantoul, Illinois. Had no idea that you could get to that town two different ways! :)
