A: There are lots of cars to consider. many of them do suck, but a few are above average. But your question is vague. What I can afford and what you can afford greatly differ I'm sure. Since I'm an old cuss I can buy a sports car and have cheap insurance. You probably cannot. All 1st cars for new drivers need to be a 4 door with automatic trans, 4 cylinder engine, and not rated as a sports car. All new drivers do have some minor incident. It's the learning curve that we all go through. The last thing you want is to throw your money away on an expensive car that is hell to insure when you have a limited income. Or none at all. So look at Ford Focus, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic, Chevy Cobalt, and Dodge Avenger. It doesn't have to be fancy and you don't need to impress your friends. Impress them with intelligence not horse power. These cars will be adequate until some more time passes by and you can step up. I drove a 68 p.o.s. VW in high school. Now due to patience I drive a sweet 2010 Chevy Malibu LTZ V6. End of line
