home.

I didn't think I knew how to describe what home was to me, didn't think there was much substance to the word. I know now, it's a feeling. It's a warmth that starts at your toes and goes up through your body all the way to your fingertips - it's the sweet embrace - it's a comfort that can't be matched by anyone or anything. Home is where you are - and so this building is temporary, but it is where we find our spot together. That makes it home, and I am happy to be in it. Happy to be sitting here listening to your sweet voice - receiving your captivating smile.. being where you are. Home is something you create - something you find and elaborate on, make your own. Your my own - and there isn't much sweeter than that. My head is cloudy, and I feel like I've been gone for years. I want to just lay in bed with you for a few days, collect the lost time and make it up. I wonder when I will feel back to myself, back to routine and back to home. It's good to be here, to get the wheels starting again - get into my skin and feel it all out. I feel full, and I just want to empty it all somewhere so that I can start filling back up. The never ending process - fill it up, dump it out, repeat. But I know one thing for sure, hearing you sing is one of my favorite things in this world - and I wouldn't trade being right here right now for anything.

Sweet relief!

Have you ever had one of those days where you're so busy you can barely breathe?  That was my day today.  I dragged myself out of bed for my 8 am class and barely thought I would make it to the end of my school day at 3 pm.  God must have known this because right before the end of my afternoon class, Jeff called me!  I booked it out of the classroom and had a lovely (and long!) conversation with my wonderful husband.  It completely made my day to hear from him and to make him laugh.  I drove straight from school to work feeling more upbeat and energetic.  Little did I know I would need that energy and positive attitude to contend with my six hours in the pharmacy!  Apparently all the other Walgreens stores in the city were having technology issues, so all their customers were coming to my store to get their prescriptions.  We did twice as many prescriptions as we normally do in a day!  Although it was crazy insane (and I got stuck working the drive-thru for 2.5 hours -- UGH), being so busy made the time fly by.  And suddenly I am home for the evening, sitting on my comfy couch with my babies and watching The Closer on my TiVo.  Funny how I woke up this morning dreading my long day, but now that it's over I feel more content and at peace than I have in quite a while.  It's amazing what one little phone call can do.

On another note, I think there is a cricket in my air ducts.  He's been in there for a few days now, and it's driving my kitties crazy.  It's highly entertaining to watch them try to figure out where the chirping is coming from!  I wonder how long the little guy will last up in there...  I guess we'll see!

Okay, more to come later...  It's time for bed now.  And I feel a MAJOR nap coming on tomorrow afternoon!  Mmmmm, sleep.  :D  Goodnight all!

What Home means to Australian Author Carmel Bird

Since reading the 1997 Government Report on the Stolen Generation, titled ‘Bringing them Home’, Carmel Bird has been intrigued by the concept of ‘home’. As she says in the Introduction of Home Truth, the newly published collection of essays she has edited, ‘this is a most striking example of the powerful use of the word ‘home’, a word which is used so frequently in speech and writing without necessarily very much reflection.’

Home Truth is the result of Carmel ‘wondering what [home] means to people, how writers might explore it and describe it.’ The book is a collection of ten essays from Australian writers, including a powerful essay from Carmel herself. The other writers she chose because, ‘their work had impressed me over many years, and I was very keen to see how they would approach the subject of 'home'.’

For Carmel the end result was what she had hoped for; 'Every single essay was a delightfully fresh insight into both the writer in question, their mind and process, and into the notion of what is “home”. The essays were a great enrichment. And I was very pleased with the wide differences between them all - as well as the places where they crossed over. ’

Indeed every essay is very different and for me, the most powerful included Andrea Goldsmith’s intense study of home and grief, and Marion Halligan’s exploration of family and the homes they made in different countries throughout her life. But, most importantly, all are beautifully written and will demand further thought and reflection from the reader.

Carmel’s essay, titled Start with the Tulip, is particularly astute with such observations as ‘the charm of home is its elusiveness’ and ‘the real home is not a real place’.

She says, ‘What I meant by the unreality of home, by its not being a “real place”, was that the essence of “home” rests in the heart of the person. It is possible to describe details and to express hopes about what home is, but it seems to me that “home” really is “where the heart is” and is lodged in the heart.’

While the details of ‘home’ have changed for Carmel over the years, she says ‘I think I have always had the sense that home is the place of safety, of comfort, of nurture and warmth and love.’

So, which house has most felt like home for Carmel? ‘Actually (and fortunately perhaps) it is the house where I live now. I think that’s because it is private and spacious and has many large windows and a garden on several levels with a wide back patio where there is an ancient wisteria.’

‘My little grandson comes often and we explore the garden together, and play here. It is a sweet place. He and I plant things and cook and paint and make music. It all feels full of heart, and is a place of nurture - for me as well as for him… It seems like a world.’

Sticky Date Pudding

Aren't sweet indulgences one of life's nicer moments? Like savouring a warm Sticky Date Pudding with freshly-made Butterscotch Sauce, accompanied by a generous scoop of homemade Vanilla Bean Ice-cream?

Sticky Date Pudding. Never really fancied it because all the (bad) renditions I have ever tried tasted nothing of "sticky", "date" or "pudding". Instead, they have always been "dry", "bland" and "cake".

Then, some 5 months ago, I finally sampled a good Sticky Date Pudding. That was at Boomarang, with Brad. I remember it was the one thing we were most eager to try out after reading Catherine's rave review. And we were not let down - the pudding was sticky and moist, with a slight gelatinous texture. I think that last trait is the hallmark of a good Sticky Date Pudding - it shouldn't crumble like a cake.

Anyway, after that lunch, I promised myself I would try to make it at home. I even bought my dates way before the recent explosion of dates on our supermarket scene (due to Ramadan). But I kept putting it off time and again, thanks to the many other tantalising dishes I saw online. Distractions, they are. Thank goodness dates keep very well in the fridge!

And then, lately, I saw two versions - at Fel's and at Evan's. They both looked incredibly, impossibly good! Needless to say, I had pudding envy (sorry Freud!). And you know how food blogs are, they are contagious. One look and I got all fired up and inspired, and I dragged my sorry butt and got down to work.

Recipe
(from Exclusively Food - please visit their blog for excellent step-by-step pics)

For the Sticky Date Pudding
- 270g (1 1/2 cups) deseeded dried dates (I used Mazafati dates)
- 312ml (1 1/4 cups) water
- 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
- 60g (1/4 cup) butter, roughly chopped
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
- 188g (1 1/4 cups) self-raising flour
- 150g (2/3 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar (I reduced to 100g)

Not the most pleasant-looking batter, I know. Haha!

1. Place dates and water in a small saucepan over high heat. When the mixture starts to boil, add bicarbonate of soda and 60g butter, and remove from the heat. Stir and then set aside for 25 minutes (the butter will melt during this time).

2. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius (160 degrees Celsius fan-forced). If you are not using a fan-forced oven, adjust the oven rack to the lower half of the oven so the top of the pudding will be in the centre of the oven.

3. Grease a 20cm diameter (top inside measurement) round springform pan and line the base and side with baking paper.
Note: I decided to use muffin tins instead. Too lazy to line a cake tin.

4. Place cooled date mixture in a food processor. Pulse mixture a few times to form a chunky paste.
Note: I used my potato masher instead. Too lazy to take out my food processor! Just mash directly in the saucepan.

5. Add eggs and vanilla to date mixture and pulse a couple of times until just combined.
Note: Just whisk directly in the saucepan. Oh boy, I am pure genius!

6. Stir flour and 150g (2/3 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar together in a medium bowl. Use the back of the spoon to break up any lumps of brown sugar. Add date mixture to the flour mixture and gently fold the ingredients together until just combined.

7. Pour batter into prepared pan. If, when baking, the pudding starts to overbrown, loosely cover it with greaseproof paper.

8. Bake the pudding for about 50-60 minutes (about 20-30 minutes if baking in muffin tins), or until it springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. A thin-bladed knife or wooden skewer inserted into the centre of the pudding should come out without any batter attached.

I interrupt my son's eating to show you a peek of how moist and sticky the inside looks.

For the Butterscotch Sauce
(adapted from Australian GoodFood Magazine, July 2010, and seen at muffinsareuglycupcakes and Evan's Kitchen Ramblings)

Make the sauce when the pudding is baking.
- 185ml whipping cream
- 165g firmly packed brown sugar
- 150g butter, chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt

1. Melt all the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until mixture thickens. Make sure the sugar does not burn.

2. Leave to cool slightly.

* I believe this step makes the pudding sticky:
When the pudding has finished baking, leave it in the pan and allow it to cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Using a skewer, pierce several deep holes in the pudding. Pour about 125ml (1/2 cup) of the hot butterscotch sauce over the pudding. Allow to stand for 5 minutes before removing from the pan.
* Note: As I used muffin tins, I removed each individual pudding after they had cooled down a little, but still warm to touch (about 15 minutes after baking). I then pricked them with a toothpick before spooning warm butterscotch sauce over. This helped the sauce penetrate into the pudding, making them extra moist and sticky. Make sure you place your pudding on a cooling rack over a tray, to catch the excess butterscotch sauce that will drip and make a mess.

Serve pudding with hot butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice-cream. I made my own vanilla bean ice-cream ... which I might blog about another day, if I have the time.

Store leftover pudding and sauce in the refrigerator or freezer (freeze the sauce separately). Suitable to reheat.

Ho ho ho! My first (and laughable) attempt at making an ice-cream quenelle. :(

As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and my pudding ain't shabby at all! ;) It was sticky, moist and dotted with delicious bits of dates. I wish it was slightly "chewier" though, but what the heck, I can actually make decent Sticky Date Pudding from scratch, so it's a small compromise!

Silent.

It's so silent in Inti now. I can rarely hear the voice of human being. Gosh! Why foundation students are not having break?! It's like a zombie town at here. Weather is freezing cold. -.-

Headache once woke up. Guess it's the effect of not having a good sleep yesterday. Hardly have a sweet dream every night. Nightmare few days ago and had a bad insomnia last night. My brain starts functioning low i guess. >.<

Assignments, tests, they have taken away my sweet time. I wish our sem can be a little bit shorter. 6 months per sem. I'm gonna suffer from this for the next sem also. =(

Wish to go back so badly. Home is always the sweetest place. I miss home, I miss daddy mummy, I miss home-cooked food. The food here is sickening.

And I miss him. :(

Home Sweet Home?

Our house (flat) whatever you'd choose to call it,I've realised has one sole purpose (apart from the default providing a roof over your head function).
It (yes i-2 has a brain of its own,its true) thinks 'O! Reef has not adventure for a day now! Lets give it one! '

As many of you know..apart from looking for new work (outside of home) the main thingI do these days is settle the house (Considering this includes things that belongs us,my mom's sister's and my sister's stuff) its a tad bit tedious.(its not difficult...it just seems never ending).

All this I wouldn't mind if I didn't have to keep having hurdles like MadamPushpa (our house help) not coming,Termites and things like that.

And now the latest is...for the last two days...the door of Balcony attached to my room is jammed. It refuses to open. And I put clothes to dry there almost three days ago!My last resort is to get them out from my window.Or like my mom's brilliant suggestions:
a)Remove the grill of the window and push the door open from the other side.
b)Save money, buy the adjacent flat so that we can have a door that leads into that balcony and then push it open from the other side.

And the worst is...the cleaning I'll have to do once the door opens! (Shakes her head in Sigh!)

(Write Alice in Wonderland she says,I reply...more like Alice in Dunderland. She says then write 'Reef in Dunderland'.Thanks Mom! (Sigh!)

Dude with little James

Sunday was kind of a bittersweet day. Josh was ordained an Elder but we also had to say goodbye to my sister Jenny and her cute little family, including this cute little boy. They are moving to Texas because my brother-in-law, Jonathan, is starting Optometry School. We are going to miss them all so much but we're excited for their new adventure! I'm was sorry we didn't get any pictures with Jenny and Jonathan

that night, but here are some with cute little James.

Phew! Well that just about sums up the past month or so. This is my last week of work at the preschool. It has been a great summer job, but it will also be nice to be done. On Saturday we'll be driving out to Colorado to spend a whole week with Ryan's family before school starts up again.

It's crazy that summer's just about over, but it has been a great one! :)

MOPS Water Day

I attend a MOPS (mothers of preschoolers) group at our church. I really enjoy the speakers and the topics that are addressed. There is also great food and fun crafts as well as childcare. Anyway, we don't officially meet over the summer but there are a number of playdates. Today was a water playdate at the home of the MOPS facilitator. She has a beautiful yard and the kids especially enjoyed her little fish pond and her giant chocolate lab named Max.

There are giant fish in the water and the kids got to feed them. Brad really liked that.

Some of the other kids from church.

She also let us pick fruits and vegetables from her garden. I think Brad ate every ripe strawberry that was there! We even ended up taking a pumpkin home!

Seriously, this woman is amazing! She does so many wonderful things and does them all with excellence.

Sky enjoyed standing on the mossy rocks.

And now for the dog...

The kids took turns brushing Max so that he could go swimming. He is like a big bear and was so gentle with all the kids, even when they brushed his fur the wrong way.

Then the kids took turns throwing the ball into the pool and watching Max retrieve it. I really liked Max. I have to admit that it made me think about having a dog. But that's a discussion for another day...
