My Mobile Phones In The Past Decade

One night I was fiddling with my Treo 650 and out of the blue I suddenly recalled one after the other all the phones I've ever used. Technology has come a long way in the past 10 years. I thought I'd share my personal mobile phone history with you all.

Mobile Usability: How Nokia Changed the Face of the Mobile PhoneMotorola CD930- my first phone. Bought 2nd hand in 2000 from a friend who swore it came from Europe. I had no reason not to believe him. At the time, close to 99% of phones sold in the Philippines were Nokia. The display had a very luminescent green backlight and finer dots compared to the blocky text on yellowish-green backlights the Nokias screens had. I had to buy a new phone when the battery decided to call it quits and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere.

Nokia 3310 - bought a few months after getting a steady job. It was a practical choice. Accessories for Nokias had started to flood the market making it cheaper to maintain. This was my 'ligaw' phone. It spanned 3 relationships, the last one heralding a new chapter in my life. I spent a small fortune in 300-peso call cards on this thing calling my wife-to-be. It paid off as you can tell. I got married to her ;-)  Incidentally, I bought my first ever ringtone for this phone. Hazard a guess? It was Shaggy's It Wasn't Me.

Nokia 7110 - the Matrix phone, as I called it. This phone lured me into subscribing to a postpaid plan. I just had to have it. It was so cool releasing the keypad cover on that phone to take a call, Neo style!

Nokia 3210 - downgraded to this hand-me-down when I needed cash and sold both the 3310 and the 7210. Darn, now that I think about it all the Nokias back then always ended in '10'. Like it was a last name or sumthin'.

Nokia 3100- got this brand-spanking-new after I renewed my contract. This thing lasted a really long time. After I stopped using it, I gave it to my mom. It died last year after 2 power buttons, 3 batteries and at least 10 face plate changes. I don't even remember how old it was!

Krusell Classic Multidapt for Motorola ROKR E1, E398- BlackMotorola E398 - the version of the Moto ROKR that wasn't tainted by the curse that was iTunes 4. It was the 1st phone to support TransFlash (eventually renamed MicroSD). I had to ask a friend in the US to send me one because the MicroSD cards sold locally cost twice as much. The music I loaded on the thing kept me happy despite the absence of an iPod in my life.

Palm Treo650 - this was sent as a gift by an Aunt of ours. 4 years old and still going strong. It's got dents, peeled paint and occasional button lag but it's still my fave. It introduced me to threaded SMS and apps on a phone. The apps meant I could read ebooks, edit spreadsheets, look up a word in a dictionary or cover MPG to KM/L. That got me hooked into Smartphones. Thing  is once you get hooked there is no turning back. Stuck with it and just recently bought an HTC to replace it. After a few days I missed it, so I bought a prepaid SIM just go on using it. Now I have 2  phones I love.

Krusell Leather Case for Sony Ericsson K310i/K510i Classic Multidapt with clip - BLACKSony-Ericsson K530i - it was my 1st 3G phone. It had a great cam for it size. Browser was great, Opera Mini was even better despite the smallish screen. Also had a good MP3 player, but I hated that it took only MS-Micro cards. Those cards are expensive. I had to relinquish it to my wife as she had lost her phone at the time. It lived a short life. It died a few months out of the box when it was dropped into a bucket of water. Don't ask me, it wasn't me. I was using the Treo650 when it kicked the bucket. :-p

Samsung SGH-E590 - originally bought this for my mom to replace the Nokia 3100. It had a great camera for the price. The screen was great too. I ended up using it for a while. But my joy was cut short when it died 3 days after I got it. The battery would heat up and it couldn't get a signal whatever I did. I was able to return it to Smart, but the replacement took close to a month. It was working for another 3 months then had the same battery and signal problem. I had it fixed under warranty and it's been fine since then. My wife uses it now, because while waiting for a replacement unit I bought a Nokia 1208 for mom. And because of the bad experience and anecdotal info that Samsungs were known to have battery problems, I've swore never to buy another Samsung again.

T-Mobile Nokia 1208 Prepaid Cell Phone
Nokia 1208 - the cheapest phone I have ever laid my eyes on. I got it for Php 1,400. Fearing another lemon like the Samsung because it cost half as much, I used it for a few days before turning it over to my mom. It's about as basic as you can get. The color screen only supported 3 lines of text. Both text and graphics appeared big and blocky. It's keypad was rubbery and the numbers felt like they'd fade in a matter of months. I used it mostly for calls and it was great. Texting was another matter though, because of the rubbery keypad. Battery life was outstanding. It could last close to five days if all you did was send text messages and an occasional 2-minute call. It's most important feature was up on top -- it had a flashlight!

Advanced Screen Protector (HTC Tattoo Series)HTC Tattoo - after waiting around for prices to come down, I found the Smartphone I couldn't pass up on. It's got all the things I wanted -- a large screen for reading ebooks, mail + calendar sync, 3G, WiFi, GPS, a Linux OS and tons of free apps! Android is tha Bomb!

So, what about you? What phones were you using 10, 5 and 2 years ago? Leave a comment. Let's reminisce about old kit.

N86 - Review Coming Soon....

I am getting set to review the Nokia N86,from the good folks at WomWorld Nokia....

The Nokia N86 is the first mobile from Nokia to feature an 8MP camera. The N86 was heavily criticized for not having a Xenon flash, which Nokia defended heavily. So i decided that i am going to put the N86 under my own personal microscope. So readers keep your eyes on the blog and await my review...

Best mobile games

I'm a Nokia user and every now and then I feel like playing something with my phone. Here's a little list of games of enjoyable games, in no particular order. They should work with other models than Nokia as well as they are made with Java.

Ukko's Escape. A free and addictive one thumb game where your mission is to keep jumping upwards to make Ukko happy. Ukko's happiness decreases if he falls or does not jump and when he's out of happiness the game ends -- unless you managed to actually jump all the way up, in which case you win. The levels get increasingly harder and you can feel how you are making progress when you get further and further with each try. Ukko's Escape has even got a global highscore list at RumbleX and it seems that my record for the Hard difficulty level is still unbeaten. :)

Yet Another Tetris. Just what the title says, but this is the best free mobile implementation that I have come across. The arcade mode keeps the games short and hectic when extra rows are regularly added to the bottom of the screen. :)

Rollercoaster Revolution 99 Tracks. This is a commercial game but I once came across an offer and got it for free. In the game you control the speed of rollercoaster cars and try to collect smileys while avoiding crashing. As the game progresses you unlock new tracks, a couple of new car types and so-called awards, which are just cosmetic but nice anyway. 99 tracks do sometimes make it feel like the game was repeating itself, but if you like perfecting your accomplishments then this game might just be for you. There's also a free online version of the game available.

Tower Wars. I had actually forgotten about this free game, found it again when writing this post and ended up playing it for quite a while. Tower Wars is a tower defense game. In the game you place various kinds of gun turrets in front of forces of Chaos and either try to create a maze for them or to fill the edges of existing mazes with as effective cannon setups as possible. The graphics are good and there's a nice twist in that the game progresses through decades and millenniums: you start with rock-slinging huts and progress all the way to laser turrets and such. My online favorite of the genre is Desktop Tower Defense. :)

Branding or Product Innovation?

On 31st July 1995 India made its first cellular call on a Nokia phone using Nokia network and today after 15 years we have 15 companies fighting in telecom sector to reach on top. Apart from this we have over 50 mobile phone manufacturing companies selling there mobile phones in India. With current mobile subscriber base of 635 million every mobile manufacturer is trying to expand its market share. Irony is the company which started all in India is taking the maximum beating.

In upper segment Nokia faces tough competition from Apple, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, RIM(Blackberry), Motorola. Nokia's current best smartphone N900 features and technology is already lagging behind of iPhone 4, Galaxy S, Milestone, Xperia X10. To stand against them Nokia needs to come up with some product innovation to remain in smartphone market or else the biggest manufacturer would be wiped out of the segment ruled by it. Latest in line from Nokia is N8 which shows some signs of a good product but i guess its entry is too late in market and also it runs on Symbian OS which itself is way behind of Android(Google OS) and iOS(Apple OS).

Now, if we talk about lower segment there are new player raining in market and eating up Nokia share. Although these players are targeting lower and middle income group of Urban and especially rural, they are spending hefty for branding. We have seen Micromax coming and shouting aloud in market and grabbing a chuck of Nokia market share, same thing Karbonn tried although it wasn't as successful as Micromax. Branding ideas from these newly entered manufacturers are quite unique and appealing. For instance Wynncom mobiles not only made Bipasha Base and Saif as there brand ambassadors but also they recently came up with new scheme i.e with their mobile one can send free sms to anywhere in India, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia etc.(powered by 160by2.com). Another example is Lava mobiles which made their phone with Alpha keypad instead of QWERTY used by every other manufacturer to be different and visible in crowd and now they have announced to be the first mobile manufacturers to include rupee sign on their phone.

With such unique marketing ideas tried by new entrants to make a brand and also pressure from technology advanced companies such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola is making a sandwich out of Nokia.

Nokia is fighting will all this on the brand name and service network they had established for years in India. But only relying on brand name won't help for long. It's time for them to come up with some product innovation along with re-enforcement of their brand.

Nokia seeks to reconnect with the US market

Nokia seeks to reconnect with the US market

Berlin: Mary T. McDowell, a 46-year-old Chicago native, is acutely aware that her employer, Nokia, the mobile phone maker from Finland, has a lot of work to do.

The task is particularly daunting in the United States, where Nokia shows little of the swagger of a global powerhouse that sells about 11 cellphones a second. With a skimpy 8 percent share of the U.S. market, according to the research firm comScore, Nokia trails Samsung, LG, Motorola and Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry.

As Nokia seeks to turn around its smartphone lineup to try to compete with the BlackBerry and with Apple's iPhone, the company is also trying to shore up its bulk cellphone business, which accounts for 84 percent of the 432 million devices Nokia sold last year. In July, it put Ms. McDowell, a former line engineer who kept Compaq and Hewlett-Packard atop the computer server market in the 1990s, in charge of its mass-market phone operations.

Nokia N8 Review

If you were just to compare specifications, the Nokia N8 is a mobile phone that should propel the N Series from Nokia to the top of the camera phone charts. Lets review those features and take a look at what the Nokia N8 has in store.

With a 12 megapixel camera and optics from Carl Zeiss, including a wide-angle lens and the ability to shoot in high-definition video (720p resolution) and connect via HDMI to your home theatre system with Dolby Digital Plus sound, the Nokia N8 looks to take multimedia phones to a new level.

If social networking is your thing, the Nokia N8 brings all of your favourite networking sites together, including Facebook and Twitter, straight to your home screen. Upload your photos and videos to Facebook as soon as you capture them on the phone, and keep in touch with your friends direct from your mobile.

Building on the succesful Widgets which made their debut in the N97 you can personalise your N8 to your hearts content. There are three individual home screens so your phone can look different when used at work, at home and one spare.

With the growth of the OVI resource portal, there are a large number of different applications that you can get to upgrade and improve your Nokia phone and although not at the level that iPhone users can expect this resource is becoming a valuable addition for Nokia owners.

In addition to the high-quality camera and video expect to find 16 GB of internal memmory which can be expanded through micro-SD memory cards (up to a total of 32 GB) making a total possible memory of 48 GB. Llike television on your mobile? The Nokia N8 also includes on demand WebTV including channels from CNN and National Geographic, although not live TV, a feature hastily dropped by Nokia after the N96 because of the lack of support around the world. This adds an additional distraction from those long commutes as does the full featured music player including album art, playlists and the boast from Nokia that the N8 will store enough songs that you could listen to over two days worth of music without hearing the same song twice.

Connectivity includes Bluetooth, HDMI, a micro-USB connector, 3.5 mm AV connector for your headphones, FM radio and an FM transmitter. E-mail messaging is supported as you would expect as is browsing and internet capabilities which include Flash video support.

The user interface relies on a 3.5 inch high resolution screen with 16.7 million colours and 640 x 360 pixels OLED capacitive touch screen. Differing from the N97, the touch screen is capacitive rather than resistive which means it should be easier to operate with just a finger thater than a stylus. There is an accelerometer (orientation sensor), compass and an ambient light sensor, all the things you’d expect from a high range N Series mobile phone.

GPS is included with integrated GPS and A-GPS receiver and OVI Maps with free car and pedestrian navigation will be included.

The Nokia N8 is also expected to ship with the new Symbian ^3 operating system which is still yet to be fully released by Nokia. Given the number of partners involved in the Symbian development system we would hope that this new release brings a lot of new features and stability to this rather old OS.
