A pack of dogs that attacked two miniature ponies owned by the Mobile Police Department were multiple mixed-breeds, not pit bulls, police said this afternoon. An officer on patrol heard yelping and found the ponies, Woggie and Little Joe, being attacked by at least six dogs at about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday morning just outside the department's barn at 1251 Virginia Street, according to police spokesman Christopher Levy.
The ponies were taken to a Highland Animal Hospital in Daphne, where they later died, according to Sgt. Eddie Carr, who heads the department's Mounted Unit.
Police caught three of the dogs, which were later euthanized, and set traps to catch the others.
The responding officer originally described the dogs as pit bulls, and police initially reported the incident as a pit bull attack. However, a veterinarian who euthanized the dogs later said they were "very aggressive" mixed-breeds, according to Levy.
For much of the past year, aggressive dogs have killed at least eight cats kept around the stables, Carr said. Officers who work in the Mounted Unit have tried to keep the dogs away in the past.
Police believe that someone owns the dogs, and the owners could face criminal charges. Investigators were looking into tips this afternoon, Levy said.
Many in the department's Mounted Unit had become attached to the ponies, which stood no taller than 28 inches, Carr said.
"We considered them officers, because they became our friends," Carr said.
Little Joe, a 2-year-old named for Deputy Chief Joe Kennedy, and Woggie, a 3-year-old, were purchased for a minimal price about two years ago, Carr said. They ate only about 50-pounds of feed a month, and cost little to maintain.
Police had plans to use the ponies to help pull children with disabilities through a Mardi Gras parade next year, Carr added.
"We took good care of them," Carr said. "They were here for the public -- the kids especially. We were proud of these two fellas."

One night I was fiddling with my Treo 650 and out of the blue I suddenly recalled one after the other all the phones I've ever used. Technology has come a long way in the past 10 years. I thought I'd share my personal mobile phone history with you all.
Motorola CD930- my first phone. Bought 2nd hand in 2000 from a friend who swore it came from Europe. I had no reason not to believe him. At the time, close to 99% of phones sold in the Philippines were Nokia. The display had a very luminescent green backlight and finer dots compared to the blocky text on yellowish-green backlights the Nokias screens had. I had to buy a new phone when the battery decided to call it quits and I couldn't find a replacement anywhere.
Nokia 3310 - bought a few months after getting a steady job. It was a practical choice. Accessories for Nokias had started to flood the market making it cheaper to maintain. This was my 'ligaw' phone. It spanned 3 relationships, the last one heralding a new chapter in my life. I spent a small fortune in 300-peso call cards on this thing calling my wife-to-be. It paid off as you can tell. I got married to her ;-) Incidentally, I bought my first ever ringtone for this phone. Hazard a guess? It was Shaggy's It Wasn't Me.
Nokia 7110 - the Matrix phone, as I called it. This phone lured me into subscribing to a postpaid plan. I just had to have it. It was so cool releasing the keypad cover on that phone to take a call, Neo style!
Nokia 3210 - downgraded to this hand-me-down when I needed cash and sold both the 3310 and the 7210. Darn, now that I think about it all the Nokias back then always ended in '10'. Like it was a last name or sumthin'.
Nokia 3100- got this brand-spanking-new after I renewed my contract. This thing lasted a really long time. After I stopped using it, I gave it to my mom. It died last year after 2 power buttons, 3 batteries and at least 10 face plate changes. I don't even remember how old it was!
Motorola E398 - the version of the Moto ROKR that wasn't tainted by the curse that was iTunes 4. It was the 1st phone to support TransFlash (eventually renamed MicroSD). I had to ask a friend in the US to send me one because the MicroSD cards sold locally cost twice as much. The music I loaded on the thing kept me happy despite the absence of an iPod in my life.
Palm Treo650 - this was sent as a gift by an Aunt of ours. 4 years old and still going strong. It's got dents, peeled paint and occasional button lag but it's still my fave. It introduced me to threaded SMS and apps on a phone. The apps meant I could read ebooks, edit spreadsheets, look up a word in a dictionary or cover MPG to KM/L. That got me hooked into Smartphones. Thing is once you get hooked there is no turning back. Stuck with it and just recently bought an HTC to replace it. After a few days I missed it, so I bought a prepaid SIM just go on using it. Now I have 2 phones I love.
Sony-Ericsson K530i - it was my 1st 3G phone. It had a great cam for it size. Browser was great, Opera Mini was even better despite the smallish screen. Also had a good MP3 player, but I hated that it took only MS-Micro cards. Those cards are expensive. I had to relinquish it to my wife as she had lost her phone at the time. It lived a short life. It died a few months out of the box when it was dropped into a bucket of water. Don't ask me, it wasn't me. I was using the Treo650 when it kicked the bucket. :-p
Samsung SGH-E590 - originally bought this for my mom to replace the Nokia 3100. It had a great camera for the price. The screen was great too. I ended up using it for a while. But my joy was cut short when it died 3 days after I got it. The battery would heat up and it couldn't get a signal whatever I did. I was able to return it to Smart, but the replacement took close to a month. It was working for another 3 months then had the same battery and signal problem. I had it fixed under warranty and it's been fine since then. My wife uses it now, because while waiting for a replacement unit I bought a Nokia 1208 for mom. And because of the bad experience and anecdotal info that Samsungs were known to have battery problems, I've swore never to buy another Samsung again.
Nokia 1208 - the cheapest phone I have ever laid my eyes on. I got it for Php 1,400. Fearing another lemon like the Samsung because it cost half as much, I used it for a few days before turning it over to my mom. It's about as basic as you can get. The color screen only supported 3 lines of text. Both text and graphics appeared big and blocky. It's keypad was rubbery and the numbers felt like they'd fade in a matter of months. I used it mostly for calls and it was great. Texting was another matter though, because of the rubbery keypad. Battery life was outstanding. It could last close to five days if all you did was send text messages and an occasional 2-minute call. It's most important feature was up on top -- it had a flashlight!
HTC Tattoo - after waiting around for prices to come down, I found the Smartphone I couldn't pass up on. It's got all the things I wanted -- a large screen for reading ebooks, mail + calendar sync, 3G, WiFi, GPS, a Linux OS and tons of free apps! Android is tha Bomb!
So, what about you? What phones were you using 10, 5 and 2 years ago? Leave a comment. Let's reminisce about old kit.

If you are a golfer you need to choose the right club to hit the ball in the right situation. If you are a carpenter you need to choose the right chisel to make just the perfect fit. If you are a computer repair person, if you don't choose the right Alan wrench you are not going to get very far. But what if you are just washing cars - I mean all you need is a bucket of water and a sponge right, it doesn't matter does it?
Au contraire my friends, it does matter, it matters very much, especially if you are doing fleets of vehicles, and using a pressure washer. Depending on what kind of job you are doing, you might even need a hot-water pressure washer, and several different tips on the end of the gun to force the spray in a manner that will clean efficiently, and deliver the number of cleaning units you need to get to the surface, to complete your operations.
For years before retirement, I ran a mobile car washing and fleet truck washing business, and we actually franchised it around the country. Not long ago, someone who is in the mobile car washing business asked me which tips they should use to do this type of cleaning. Specifically they were talking about the cleaning of car dealership car lots, where there might be 100 to 200 cars in any one place. So I was asked;
"What tip angle is best?"
For cleaning cars I recommend 20-35-degree tips, for cleaning heavy equipment you need more firepower, for cleaning trucks you going to want get in there and clean the frame and underneath the gas tanks and the front axles, around the refer units if they have one, and any mechanical hydraulic components and such, you might need a 15° tip, but then switch over to the 20 or 35° tip when cleaning the trailers and cabs - you don't want to peel decals, unless you want to see someone really pissed off and livid!
When cleaning graffiti - always have a zero-tip in your pocket incase a gang-banger comes back to challenge you, just shoot em! The reality is you can actually cut off your finger, or put a big gash in it, if you hit with hot water at 3500 PSI with a zero tip, it's completely dangerous. But then again so are gang bangers after you clean the graffiti off the wall, they are quite upset.
Anyway, I hope this discussion has helped you consider the different types of tips to use for different types of cleaning. Please consider all this.

I'm a Nokia user and every now and then I feel like playing something with my phone. Here's a little list of games of enjoyable games, in no particular order. They should work with other models than Nokia as well as they are made with Java.
Ukko's Escape. A free and addictive one thumb game where your mission is to keep jumping upwards to make Ukko happy. Ukko's happiness decreases if he falls or does not jump and when he's out of happiness the game ends -- unless you managed to actually jump all the way up, in which case you win. The levels get increasingly harder and you can feel how you are making progress when you get further and further with each try. Ukko's Escape has even got a global highscore list at RumbleX and it seems that my record for the Hard difficulty level is still unbeaten. :)
Yet Another Tetris. Just what the title says, but this is the best free mobile implementation that I have come across. The arcade mode keeps the games short and hectic when extra rows are regularly added to the bottom of the screen. :)
Rollercoaster Revolution 99 Tracks. This is a commercial game but I once came across an offer and got it for free. In the game you control the speed of rollercoaster cars and try to collect smileys while avoiding crashing. As the game progresses you unlock new tracks, a couple of new car types and so-called awards, which are just cosmetic but nice anyway. 99 tracks do sometimes make it feel like the game was repeating itself, but if you like perfecting your accomplishments then this game might just be for you. There's also a free online version of the game available.
Tower Wars. I had actually forgotten about this free game, found it again when writing this post and ended up playing it for quite a while. Tower Wars is a tower defense game. In the game you place various kinds of gun turrets in front of forces of Chaos and either try to create a maze for them or to fill the edges of existing mazes with as effective cannon setups as possible. The graphics are good and there's a nice twist in that the game progresses through decades and millenniums: you start with rock-slinging huts and progress all the way to laser turrets and such. My online favorite of the genre is Desktop Tower Defense. :)

Windows Phone 7 Will Be a Platform for Video Games
Microsoft will have Windows Phone 7 users rockin' and rollin' by integrating 50 video games into the mobile platform. The Windows Phone 7 games will interact with Microsoft's Xbox Live universe. Microsoft's Kevin Unangst said the software maker is approaching Windows Phone 7 "as we would a console" to ensure success.
If people chatting or texting on their smartphones on the railroad get you annoyed, wait until you see them rocking out to Guitar Hero 5 during the morning commute. Betting big on mobile Relevant Products/Services gaming to stand apart from rival operating systems, Microsoft on Tuesday announced 50 games it will integrate into its Windows Phone 7 Series devices in time for this year's holiday season.
The games run the gamut from family-style fare like Bejeweled and Uno to Xbox classics like Rocket Riot, which will make its mobile debut with Windows 7. The phone-based games will interact with Microsoft's Xbox Live universe so users can update their avatars, keep track of their game score, and add achievements to their profiles. They can also access Halo:Waypoint, a Live hub where they can watch videos and interact with other players, though the hot game itself apparently isn't going mobile.
Pushing the Envelope
"We're really approaching this as we would a console, so we have to deliver the breadth of games and the quality people expect from Xbox," said Kevin Unangst, Microsoft's senior director of PC and mobile gaming, in a posting on the Microsoft News Center site. "To have this quantity and quality of games committed this far ahead of launch, with even more to come, is a statement of support that says Windows Phone 7 will be a big success."
Other notable games announced at this year's GameCon in Cologne, Germany, include Digital Chocolate's 3D Brick Breaker Revolution, Protégé Games' Armor Valley, i-Play's Fast & Furious 7, Konami's Frogger, Gameloft's Assassins Creed, and Arkedo's O.M.G. Additional titles will be named before the Windows 7 launch in October, with more titles to be added every week, Microsoft said.
"Windows Phone 7 is the launch of a major gaming platform Relevant Products/Services for Microsoft," said Matt Booty, general manager of mobile gaming for MGS. "Just like we've done with Xbox 360, our charter is to push the envelope and deliver definitive games that maximize the platform."
Strongest Play
Consumer-devices specialist Avi Greengart of Current Analysis says that while Windows 7 allows Microsoft to utilize all its diverse assets, including the Bing search Relevant Products/Services engine, SharePoint, Outlook, Office and Zune Marketplace, "Xbox Live is arguably Microsoft's strongest play -- if you'll pardon the pun. [It] has performed extremely well in the living room, and mobile gaming is an area where Microsoft can differentiate itself from other mobile operating systems with a rich, connected experience."
Also, Greengart added, the competition is weak. "Android and RIM badly lag in games, HP/Palm does have some 3-D games but doesn't have much of an installed base, and Nokia's n-Gage never took off. Apple dominates 99-cent casual games, but it hasn't rolled out its game network Relevant Products/Services yet and has no ties to the living room."
Greengart said the Windows 7 gaming emphasis is a smarter pitch for the younger demographic than its earlier, disastrous line of Kin phones, geared heavily toward the social-media obsessed. The low-selling phones, powered by the Windows CE operating system, were distributed by Verizon Wireless but pulled off the market in July just a few months after their release in April.
"It's hard to argue whether Microsoft did or didn't understand younger consumers with the Kin, given how lousy the Kin was," Greengart said. "It failed in its most basic social-networking tasks, it lacked apps, and it was priced like a smartphone."
