One of Microsoft's Gold Partners has had its relationship with the software giant unceremoniously terminated, after being revealed to be orchestrating a telephone support scam.

Comantra, based in India, are said to have cold-called computer users in the UK, Australia, Canada and elsewhere, claiming to offer assistance in cleaning up virus infections.
The bogus support calls came from Comantra employees who claimed to be representing Microsoft, and used scare tactics to talk users into opening the Event Viewer on Windows, where a seemingly dangerous list of errors would be seen.

Once terrified by what appears to be a worrying collection of warning messages, and believing this was evidence of a malware infection, users would be tricked into allowing Comantra technicians to gain remote access to their computer, and hand over their credit card details to fix any "problems".
In the past, vulnerable elderly people have even been told by scammers that heavy rain may have caused a computer virus infection.

What makes the scam particularly audacious is that during the scam campaign, Comantra were a certified Gold partner of Microsoft, and when quizzed by skeptical computer owners would use their status to trick potential victims into believing the call was legitimate.

A search for "Comantra" on the internet finds a large number of posts and complaints about the scam telephone calls, stretching back over 18 months. Some users have even asked on Microsoft's own message forums how it is possible for the firm to have "Gold Partner" status.

As PC Pro reports, a Microsoft spokesperson has now confirmed that Comantra has at long last been struck off their Gold Partner list:

"We were made aware of a matter involving one of the members of the Microsoft Partner Network acting in a manner that caused us to raise concerns about this member's business practices. Following an investigation, the allegations were confirmed and we took action to terminate our relationship with the partner in question and revoke their Gold status."
"There are no circumstances under which we would ever allow partners or any other organisations to pose as Microsoft. We view matters such as these extremely seriously and take immediate action if such behaviour is brought to our attention and found to be the case."

Hmm.. Maybe someone should tell Comantra to update their website and remove that Gold Partner logo?

Bakun Dam generates Putrajaya-S'wak tension

Many were relieved at the announcement that one of Malaysia's most controversial and largest projects - the Bakun Dam - will finally be completed by this December, after 16 years of construction.

However, problems surrounding the world's second highest concrete-faced rockfill dam are far from over.

Apparently tension is brewing between the Sarawak and federal governments over who should be the winner in the tariff negotiation.

Some worry that the state government is using its power over the dam impoundment as a bargaining chip to demand a lower tariff.

But Sarawak Hidro Bhd, the owner of the Bakun Dam wholly-owned by the Finance Ministry, has dismissed such speculation.

Taib's smelter eyeing cheap power

According to media reports, the power purchase negotiations between Sarawak Hidro and Sarawak-owned energy provider Sarawak Energy Berhad had hit a snag.

Sarawak Energy was said to be eyeing for a cheaper tariff of between six to seven per kWh - much lower than the 10 to 15 sen per kWh demanded by Sarawak Hidro in order to cover the project's cost overruns.

Two smelter companies - Sarawak Aluminium Company, a joint-venture between Cahaya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMS) and Australia-based Rio Tinto Aluminium, and Smelter Asia Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between GIIG Holdings Sdn Bhd and Aluminium Corp of China Ltd - were also said to be aiming for a lower tariff.

Both companies have become key buyers of the electricity produced by the dam, which can reach 2,400MW.

CMS is a conglomerate owned by Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud's family. A cheaper tariff would mean lower costs for the smelter.

Meanwhile, GIIG Holdings Sdn Bhd is a company controlled by tycoon Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary who emerged as Malaysia's key industrial player during former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's rule.

Impoundment permit as bargain chip?

Another contentious issue between the state and federal governments involves the ownership of the Bakun Dam.

The former reportedly wanted to buy up the dam at RM6 billion, but the latter was looking at an indicative price of RM8 billion.

Hence, when Sarawak Hidro openly urged the state government to give the green light to impound the reservoir as soon as possible to reduce adverse costs, speculation ran rife that the state government was using the impoundment permit as a bargaining chip in the tariff negotiation.

According to Sarawak Hidro, the dam had met the requirements for impoundment since April this year and it had submitted its undertakings to Sarawak's Ministry of Public Utilities in line with the state cabinet decision.

The state government has yet to respond, but time is running out for Putrajaya.

According to a Star report in January quoting Sarawak Hidro general manager Tan Yong Long, the impoundemt was originally slated for last November.

It needs seven months to reach the minimum operating water level for tests of the turbines to be carried out before commercial power can be generated.

Due to the delay, Sarawak Hidro will suffer an additional outlay of a maximum RM10 million per month starting June or July next year from interest, maintenance and other operating costs, according to Sarawak Hidro managing director Zulkifle Othman.

"If we are given the green light, we are looking at October to start the impoundment subject to the water level of the river," he toldMalaysiakini when contacted today.

However, Zulkifle denied that the state government was using the impoundment permit to put pressure on Putrajaya in the tariff negotiations.

It has nothing to do with the tariff negotiations, he stressed.

Zulkifle added that the state government needs to make adjustments to the current river transportation arrangement before allowing the impoundment as it would affect the river flow and water level of Sungai Rejang, which is the main means of transport in central Sarawak.

"We have submitted the information they need. The decision will be made known by the end of August, we hope," Zulkifle said.

Sarawak Hidro also targeted the end of this year to seal the power purchase agreement with Sarawak Energy.

The Sarawak government could not be reached for comment.

Cost overrun plagues Putrajaya

Cost of the controversial project had ballooned from an initial RM2.4 billion when it was announced in 1986 to around RM7.3 billion this December when the project is expected to be completed.

The project is mostly funded by taxpayers money through borrowings from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (KWAP), whose loan had skyrocketed to RM5.75bil.

With such a tremendous cost overrun, should the adverse costs continued to spiral up, the BN federal government would be subjected to fierce attacks from the opposition.

It had in fact claimed its first casualty - the plantation giant Sime Darby Berhad - the main contractor of the project. It had recorded more than RM1 billion in total cost overruns from civil works on the project.

However, if the federal government compromised for cheaper tariff, it would face another crisis - inability to cover the RM7.3bil project cost. Ever since its inception a question mark has always been hanging over the ability of the mega-dam to break even.

How the two sides reach an agreement could determine whether the rakyat's hard-earned money has been poured into a white elephant project, yet again.

In a previous article, I highlighted the conflict between PAS’s religious ideology and conditioning and the pluralist vision of a unified Malaysian society that they, as part of Pakatan Rakyat, should be committed to.

The fact is that the mode of Islamic politics in Malaysia thwarts all effort towards encouraging the religious pluralism that Malaysia is about.

Despite its ‘PAS for All’ slogan, this Islamic party has still not addressed this basic matter. The omission is curiously glaring. As it is with the currently dominant religious bureaucracy and elite, so too with the PAS bandwagon of leaders and followers, Nik Aziz and all.

We continue to be led along a path of social conditioning that quite simply perpetuates religious chauvinism. There is a lack of willingness or courage to energetically espouse an Islam that is concordant with the times and settings, with a highly multicultural, multi-religious environment, where it is conceded that there are multiple paths to a common spirituality and this diversity is celebrated. It is not as if Islam has no tradition of religious pluralism.

Be forewarned that the rigidly doctrinal approach to Islam will turn to bite us back in the future if left to be. Religious supremacy could well replace racial supremacy. This is a pitfall that the former Indonesian president and respected ulama Gus Dur sought to steer his country away from (read here).

In Malaysia, the constabulary welcomes extremists who lodge police reports against journalists who speak of a painful reality. The Muslim community keeps silent. Safer to refuse to reason, discuss or debate.

Housing discount for the rich

Insofar as racial supremacy is concerned, PAS MP Khalid Samad should be commended for taking a consistent lead in battering that which is ethically indefensible.

He defends a proposal to relinquish the giving of discounts to wealthy Malays for home purchases as a move to improve competitiveness and investor confidence. Khalid questioned how this would help the poor and maintained that “PAS and its allies in the opposition bloc shared the view that discounts for high-end properties do not help the poor Malays, being beyond their budget; and only served to enrich wealthy Malays”.

According to DAP's Tunku Abdul Aziz, such discounts are an abuse of the New Economic Policy (NEP). He issues a reminder that nothing in the federal constitution accords discounts for rich Malays to purchase multi-million dollar houses. And yet for the proposer, MP Tony Pua, a bullet in the mail.

Objectors fail to see that the amount of these discounts, if instead appropriated for a special fund for the poor, could have a more beneficial societal effect than otherwise. The very rich are likely to hoard away excess sums of money or purchase inessential wants as their essential needs have been satisfied. For the poor, aid such as affordable housing could mean a world of a difference, one between a contented stomach and desperation.

Khalid Samad also notes that “poverty in the country knows no race”. Indeed so. Poverty afflicts all, even though the racial proportions may vary by place and in the absolute. Some may have wondered if a Chinese ever goes hungry in Malaysia. But read in The Star, for example, of the widowed Malaysian Chinese mother who does without to feed her four children an oats beverage at breakfast, often their only meal for the entire day.

The urgency and pain felt by the afflicted, whether a destitute Malay, Indian, Chinese or Orang Asli is no different — it is equally acute and degrading.

In the face of such race-blind poverty, a government, civil bureaucracy or NGO that chooses to prioritise poverty relief by race can only be described as heartless and racist.

To proffer an excuse that there isn’t enough money to go around would be despicable. Here a country that rakes in an amount of taxes that allows its government to be so prodigal as to allocate a dozen billion ringgit a year (close to 2% of national income or 6% of the 2010 government budget) for the Prime Minister’s department alone – a department that is one of the least aligned with the public purpose.

Considering just the haemorrhagic wastages and leakages that occur in public finance and resource management, it is clear that there is more than enough for all. And yet perversely the rich are fed at the public trough from which the poor are sorrily kept out. - CPI

Taib’s billions: Will MACC’s Abu Kassim walk the talk?

Will the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) finally act against Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud now that documented evidence is available over his vulgar amassment of wealth?

Or will its chief Abu Kassim Mohamed step down?

That’s the question being asked in Sarawak's social and political circles.

It appears that all eyes are on Abu Kassim who bragged not too long ago that he will “step down” if “no investigation is carried out on any report, even against a Cabinet minister”.

Thus far, a flurry of reports have already been lodged with the MACC, both in Sarawak and the Peninsula, against Taib based on a series of investigative articles by online portal Sarawak Report about Taib and his family’s multi-billion ringgit property empire in Canada, England, the US and Australia.

The latest report showcased a copy of a private agreement dating back to 1987-1988 relating to shares in Sakti International, a company that owns a building in San Francisco.

The document has Taib’s name clearly emblazoned as equity holder.

The Taib family-owned company is part of an extensive network of companies cutting across international borders. The network includes Sakto, a major Ottawa (Canada) property company, and Wallysons which owns the Abraham Lincoln Building in Seattle (US).

To quote the report: “The damning discovery lays bare a system of private deals, which enabled the chief minister to conceal his true ownership of the properties… Under the system, while Taib’s relatives are publicly registered as the official shareholders and directors of the companies owning the properties, a separate, private agreement ensures that the shares are actually held in trust for him.”

Sham investigation

Padungan assemblyman Dominque Ng download copies of the evidence onto his blog for public viewing and left a posting that read: “Surely the weight of evidence is now such that the MACC will be unable to ignore the deluge of demands requiring thorough investigation into Sarawak’s white-haired Raja?”

But the question remains: will the MACC walk its talk?

No one believes it will, and even if it does they think it will be yet another sham investigation.

According to Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian, the people have lost faith in MACC and are of the view that not much will get done.

“Sarawakians are fed up with the fraudulent ways of Taib. They have lost faith in the MACC...

“In Sarawak, Taib’s wealth is common knowledge. Sarawakians have known this for sometime... we just did not know the vastness of his empire abroad and the extent of his wealth. But now there is solid proof…” he said, referrring to documents made available on the Sarawak Report website.

Declaring that Sarawak’s money must be returned to the people, Bian said there was a strong web of deceit and corruption associated with Taib’s wealth.

He also questioned how such wealth could have been amassed on a gross monthly salary of less than RM50,000.

“If MACC does a genuine and thorough investigation of the source of Taib’s wealth, it is bound to find links to corruption involving millions of ringgit in public money.

“This money belongs to Sarawak and must be returned to the people,” he said.

SAS fiasco: Where's the RM50million?

A Sabah minister has been asked to explain how RM50 million paid by a businessman to a state agency in a share transaction 12 years ago disappeared.

According to Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), the minister and state government owed the people and investors an explanation as to how the amount paid by Joseph Ambrose Lee’s former company Suniwang Holdings Sdn Bhd to Warisan Harta Saabah Sdn Bhd (WHSSB) in January 1998, vanished.

SAPP secretary-general Richard Yong was responding to State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Yee Moh Chai’s statement while debating on the motion on the Saham Amanah Sabah (SAS) fiasco in the state legislative assembly recently.

Yee disclosed that the fund managers said that they had never received the amount.

“It has been more than a week since the debate over the SAS issue. During the debate, Yee revealed that he had contacted the SAS Board about the RM50 million. This is the first time that he admitted to being in contact with SAS. In the past, he feigned ignorance of SAS affairs," said Yong.

According to Yong, the minister reportedly said: “SAS confirmed to me that they never received any of the RM50 million…”

“So, where is the RM50 million?” asked the SAPP leader. “Did any person illegally pocket the money? If so, who and why has there been no action taken?”

“This is what people are waiting to know. This matter has gone on for 12 years. Eight of those 12 years, Yee was a full minster in the state cabinet. Don’t try to fool the people that after eight years, he still does not know what happened in SAS.

"He has incessantly harped on the SAS issue so he must not hide the facts anymore,” he said.

'Umno leaders' involvement'

Yong said it was also puzzling that last week, PBS supreme councillor and lawyer Chin Tek Ming had challenged SAPP president Yong Teck Lee to disclose the names of the Umno leaders involved in the SAS fiasco.

The SAPP president, Yong said, had never implied that Umno leaders were or implicated in the scandal before this.

He said that while public documents showed that Umno members were on the SAS Board, nobody, until Chin’s challenge, said they were implicated.

“Is this the real reason why Barisan Nasional leaders have refused to publish a White Paper on the SAS fiasco?" he asked alluding to the “defeated by time” manoeuvre by the state government to rule out a motion on the issue during the April sitting of the legislative assembly.

The SAPP president had at the time been furious with the tactic to deny a debate on the fund fiasco and had labelled the cabinet cowards, adding that it was also strange that Chief Minister Musa Aman had dismissed the SAS issue as “petty”.

“The records prove that the ministers were trying to avoid a debate on the SAS issue," said Yong.

He said that it was also puzzling that during the debate for a motion for a White Paper on the issue at the last assembly sitting, the 32 Umno assembly members were quiet.

“Why? Umno YBs have been very vocal on other issues but why did Umno YBs remain silent on the SAS issue?” he asked.

AA-AAAHHHH-AAHH-CHUUUUU!!!!

So, just my luck... I have a cold.  I woke up yesterday morning feeling like my sinuses were draining.  And it just got worse through out the day.  As a stay at home mommy, having a cold or not feeling good is the worst... I mean it is bad enough that I am not sleeping through the night, and then trying to function with a cold on top of that, is such a pain in the butt!  My mom had a little cold, and then Kynlee had a runny nose... but mine feels like sinuses... I don't think sinuses are contagious so maybe it is just a coincidence that we all got colds around the same time.  But nevertheless, I refuse to kiss my husband... he is such a big baby when he is sick LOL I just hate being sick when I feel like there is so much to do.  We have been very lucky when it comes to Kynlee.  She has barely had a cold at all.  

I guess you could call us germaphobs... not so much Cody, but me and my mom are guilty.  Back in 2007, I got very sick.  I was sick for 3 weeks before I even made a Doctor appointment.  I guess when you don't have insurance, you're not as quick to make an appointment as maybe you should be.  But it seemed like everyday I got worse... so much so that I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, couldn't breath, could barely talk, I couldn't even take a shower unless Cody was home because I would feel like I was going to pass out, and anything that required even the slightest bit of energy was out of the question.  My mom, being concerned, sent me some money to go to the doctor, where I later found out that, what I thought was just the flu, turned out to be severe pneumonia.  The doctor told me that he hadn't seen a case so bad in over 15 years, and that he had seen people die with much less of a case... so things were not looking good for me and I was terrified!  I was admitted into the hospital for a week.  That was probably the scariest thing I have ever had to go through... I was newly married, and hadn't even begun to live my life yet, there was so much that I wanted to do, and here I had this doctor telling me that there was a good possibility that the infection was too deep and that I may not make it.  I prayed every day that I was in that hospital... obviously I recovered.  But needless to say, I am very careful.  Always washing my hands, carrying disinfectant with me every where, keeping disinfectant wipes in Kynlee's bag... etc... I always wipe down the shopping cart, restaurant high chairs, restaurant tables, and anything else that might need to be disinfected.  And I really do think it has helped.  Kynlee has only had probably one real cold, and a little bit of a stomach bug, both lasting only a day or two.  So we have been very very lucky.  And I, myself, have been lucky as well, until now that is, I can't remember the last time I had a cold.  But I tell you what... mommy could really use a babysitter right about now... Windfall for Perak 'found', no more deficit

WHERE DID THE RM117 MILLION COME FROM?

Perak MB Zambry Abdul Kadir revealed today that the state has managed to find "extraordinary income" to the tune of RM117 million to cancel out the deficit in the state's budget.

"The budget is now balanced," he said to reporters during a press conference after the second sitting of the third session of the Perak state assembly which began and concluded today.

This windfall, he said is the result of the diligence of the BN government in their stewardship of the state.

"It was income not budgeted for, found after looking around for possible sources of revenue," he explained when asked where the money came from, without being any more specific.

Zambry (right) added that from the RM117 million, RM23 million will be used to cover the budget deficit, hence balancing it.

As for the rest of the money, he said the state government has decided to use the money to help the people by using it for poverty alleviation and infrastructure development.
This, he said, was the purpose of the RM80 million supplementary budget bill which was tabled and passed earlier by the state assembly.

The bill had come under fire from Pakatan assemblypersons who claimed that the supplementary bill will be being used to fund BN activities and will cause the budget to balloon to more than RM100 million.

"The money will not be used for the purposes alleged by the opposition," Zambry added.

'Deficit a financial instrument'

In his speech in the state assembly earlier, Zambry called the deficit a "financial instrument" which the state government can use to assist in the financial management of the state.

However he did not say if the negation of the deficit will remove the 'incentive' for the state government to spend money mindfully.

On the RM50 million that is being taken out as well, Zambry denied that the amount is being spent wastefully or taken out for nefarious purposes.

"We have money, what do we do with the money? We are investing the money to get income," he claimed.

Zambry also took a dig at state opposition leader Nizar Jamaluddin (left) for his attacks on the BN state government, calling the former MB "irresponsible".

"I don't understand how someone who claims to be a good Muslim can continue to give false information to the people. It is very unbecoming of him."

"Is this the kind of leader we want? Ask yourself," asked the Perak MB.

He speculated that the reason why the Pakatan representatives were being so contentious is because the opposition were jealous of the BN state government's achievements since they came into power.
