- 360-degree rotating plug with 4 locking position 2010-08-16 Other than that one tiny design issue, this is a great thing to have. I've added it to my laptop bag to have for all future travel! 2010-08-14 But, SO WHAT? This thing is a surge protector with three outlets and two USB outlets. Think about that for a minute. $11 (when I bought) for an iPhone/Blackberry/headset/whatever charger? Come on, each of those chargers cost $30 each. You already have the cables, or can pick them up from someone here for $2. In any event, I just went on a trip and charged an iPhone and Kindle, then switched to charge my wife's Blackberry and an iPad (yes, it will only slow charge and tell you it is not charging, but it is charging). I plugged the coffee maker into the outlet on it (the last part is not true, but just to make a point!). 2010-08-14 Note the Belkin specs page ([...]) indicates only 0.5 amp comes out the USB port. See the other review about getting a special cable to charge your phone if it requires a "work around" the phone's special USB port requirement. I like this, and gave my 2nd one away to a friend to charge her ipod. 2010-08-13 1. Converts one AC outlet into three without taking up too much space. 2. Turns an AC outlet into a dual USB charger.* 3. Protects anything you plug into it from surges.** *Many other reviewers are disappointed that they are not able to charge their USB devices with this (phones in particular). Well, I was in that camp too, as my Motorola VE20 would report "unauthorized charger" when I plugged a standard micro USB cable into it and refuse to charge it. However, I discovered that is NOT the Belkin's fault--it is Motorola's fault for putting a proprietary USB interface into their phones. After purchasing this Rocketfish charging cable Rocketfish RF-CA1MR - Cellular phone charging cable - USB - 4 pin USB Type A (M) - cellular phone connector (M) - 1.5 ft, I no longer have any problem charging my phone (hint: these cables are available all over FleeBay for cheap). If you already have one of these Belkins and it won't charge your USB device, try and find out if there's a special cable you need. One other thing about these: data cables they AIN'T, so don't expect to transfer anything but power with them--just use a standard USB cable for that. By the way, I'm not trying to blame the consumer for not knowing this. Belkin should put some kind of indication on the package that many devices require special USB cables to charge with this surge protector. **As some other astute reviewers have mentioned, the clamping voltage is 800V--this means that the surge protector will stop sending current to anything plugged into it when the voltage climbs to 800V. Unfortunately this is way too high (UL certification typically requires a clamping voltage of no more than 330V, so I don't know how this thing got certified). I hope not to find out, but I fear that if this device experiences a surge it will fry anything plugged into it before the clamping voltage is reached. If anybody has any information on this (especially if you can prove me wrong), I'd love to see a comment! BOTTOM LINE: I love this for travel, because it ensures I have enough outlets for my devices and I can leave my other USB chargers at home (as long as I remember to bring the right cables, of course). 2010-08-11 Belkin says not enough power. Why did they change specs. Why aren't they transparent and specify it doesn't for arguably number one selling new electronics product. The tech support - from southeast east asia - was disinterested in obvious change of specs - and no info for average consumer. wHO LOOKS AT POWER RATINGS. Technical Details

I used the Belkin mini surge protector with USB charger for the first time while traveling last week. Great little product - I could charge my laptop, my cell phone, and my mp3 player while I slept with no worries. The only issue I had was the placement of the USB plugs. I was a guest in someone's home and they had lighting and clock and television plugged into the bedroom outlets. Due to the mini surge protector unit needing to be plugged into the bottom of the 2 outlets most accessible for me, the clock plugged in above had to be unplugged to allow the USB charging units to be utilized. It wasn't a big issue because I plugged the clock into one of the mini surge protector outlets, but I thought it would have been more convenient if they had placed the USB chargers on the side if possible, so I wouldn't have needed to mess with the homeowner's clock (resetting the time, etc.).

I read some reviews about how this is not a very compact travel companion. Maybe. I mean you can tell how big it is from the photo, unless you are not familiar with the size of an outlet.

I have received 3 of these. The first one I returned because I could not rotate the male plug to reorient the charger. At first, the 3rd one I received didn't rotate either, although it would "wiggle" when I pushed in the white "release button." I then got a pair of pliers and GENTLY rotated the plug while pushing the release button. I then rotated the plug back and forth, and the plug then loosened up.

This is a great little device. Okay--it's not so "little," as many other reviewers have commented on, but its size has also been exaggerated. I throw it in my backpack when I travel and it's never a nuisance. I included "versatile" in my headline because this unit does three things quite well:
